Brighton has announced the acquisition of defender Diego Coppola from Hellas Verona, marking their second signing in this summer's transfer window. Coppola, currently playing for Italy in the Under-21 European Championships in Slovakia, has committed to a five-year contract with Brighton under the guidance of head coach Fabian Hurzeler. The 21-year-old has already made 81 appearances in Serie A since his debut in January 2022 and recently earned his first senior cap for Italy against Norway.

Coppola played 34 matches in Serie A last season, contributing two goals as Hellas Verona finished 14th, comfortably avoiding relegation by six points. In the 2024-25 league season, Coppola demonstrated a tackle success rate of 54.5% in Serie A. This was nearly 10% lower than Van Hecke's 64.4% but only slightly below Dunk's 58.8%. Despite these figures, Coppola excelled in interceptions, achieving 72 last season—more than any other player in Europe's top five leagues.

The duel success rates among Coppola, Dunk, and Van Hecke were closely matched, with only a 1.5% difference separating them. However, Coppola's ability to intercept possession significantly sets him apart from his new teammates at Brighton.
