Brighton climbed to second in the Premier League standings after a 1-1 draw against Southampton at the Amex Stadium. Flynn Downes equalised for Southampton just before the hour with a precise shot from outside the box, marking his first goal in the Premier League.

Southampton nearly secured their first away win of the season when Cameron Archer scored from close range. However, it was disallowed for offside. This decision led to an additional 10 minutes of play. Brighton almost clinched victory when Simon Adingra's attempt from Mitoma's cross hit the post. The draw places Brighton temporarily behind leaders Liverpool, who face Manchester City on Sunday.

Flynn Downes played a crucial role in securing Southampton's first away point this season. Despite committing five fouls, he remained on the field until replaced by Joe Aribo in the 66th minute. This result ended Southampton's streak of nine consecutive away defeats in the Premier League.

The Saints managed to avoid defeat despite conceding first, a feat they hadn't achieved since January 2023 against Everton. Russell Martin’s team has now scored in all 13 top-flight matches against Brighton, their longest scoring streak against any opponent.

Brighton have struggled defensively against Manchester City more than any other team, failing to keep a clean sheet in 15 encounters.
