Brighton Urged To Find Premier League Consistency Ahead Of Sunderland Clash

Brighton & Hove Albion face Sunderland in the Premier League, with head coach Hurzeler calling for sustained, 90-minute focus. The Seagulls seek a win after a recent setback, while Sunderland arrive buoyant after their Tyne-Wear derby victory. The match highlights the importance of set-pieces and disciplined defence for both sides.

Brighton seek a steadier 90-minute display when Sunderland visit the Amex Stadium, with Opta rating Fabian Hurzeler’s side 60.2% favourites. Brighton sit 10th in the Premier League and have not won in three league matches, while promoted Sunderland have collected 26 points from 16 games and are level with champions Liverpool before this round.

Sunderland arrive boosted by a 1-0 success against Newcastle United in the first Premier League Tyne-Wear derby since 2015-16. Nick Woltemade’s own goal early in the second half decided the contest at the Stadium of Light, continuing Regis Le Bris’ positive start in the top flight and matching Sunderland’s best 16-game top-flight tally since 2000-01.

Brighton urged to find league consistency

Brighton’s latest setback came in a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool, where Hugo Ekitike scored in the first minute and again from a corner after half-time. Brighton produced 14 attempts and an expected goals figure of 1.9, yet only one shot required a save from Alisson, underlining the team’s wasteful finishing in key moments at Anfield.

"I think we deserved more, maybe even a win, but we created so many chances,Hurzeler said. We had a bad start, and then a set-piece against us that we didn't defend well. It's about consistency and doing it for 90 minutes, and that's where we lost it. There were several key momentsand we had good chances to score goals. We must take responsibility for that loss. The game was there to win, but in the end, we couldn't take it. The goals were definitely avoidable. It's about having a good start and defending set-pieces. Set-pieces are getting so important, so we have to improve."

Hurzeler’s comments reflect wider concerns about Brighton’s recent league pattern, particularly slow starts and set-piece defending. Brighton are without a Premier League victory in December across their last nine fixtures in the month, drawing five and losing four since beating Tottenham 4-2 in 2023, though the Amex crowd still expects a strong performance before Christmas.

This will be the first Premier League meeting between Brighton and Sunderland, and their first league clash since Brighton’s 2-1 home win in the Championship during February 2005. The clubs last faced each other in any competition in August 2011, when Brighton won 1-0 in an EFL Cup tie, the fourth competitive game staged at the Amex Stadium.

Historically, Sunderland have struggled in top-flight games against Brighton, winning only one of six encounters between 1980 and 1983. That solitary victory was a 3-0 success at Roker Park in May 1982. Despite sitting three points and two places below Sunderland, Brighton are still viewed as strong favourites for this contest by the predictive models.

Sunderland’s current return of 26 Premier League points is the best by a promoted team after 16 fixtures since Hull City in 2008-09, who also reached 26. It is also the latest stage in a season, dating back to 2016-17, where a promoted side has at least as many points as the reigning champions, with Sunderland currently matching Liverpool’s total.

Brighton vs Sunderland Premier League players to watch

Defender Dan Ballard highlighted the emotional side of Sunderland’s derby victory, having been involved in last season’s 3-0 FA Cup defeat by Newcastle United. "Words can't describe it,Ballard said of the meaning of the result. Thinking back to the last game, that one hurt. For the fans, we felt like we let them down. We were so determined this time, especially the boys that experienced that day [in the FA Cup], so we're delighted. It wasn't the prettiest game, but we stuck in there, we fought really hard, and we thoroughly deserved the win."

Brighton forward Danny Welbeck once scored six Premier League goals in 26 matches for Sunderland in 2010-11, yet has never scored or assisted in nine league appearances against the Black Cats. Only matches against Manchester City, with 22 games, and Burnley, with 11, have brought more outings without direct goal involvement, a sequence Welbeck aims to stop.

At the other end, Robin Roefs stands out among Sunderland’s many new signings since promotion. Based on Opta’s expected goals on target model, Roefs has prevented 3.5 goals, the highest figure among Premier League goalkeepers this season. Roefs has faced 19.5 expected goals on target and conceded 16 goals, underlining a strong individual campaign so far.

Analytical projections favour Brighton despite Sunderland’s momentum. The Opta win probability model gives Brighton a 60.2% chance of victory, a draw at 20.9%, and Sunderland at 18.9%. Brighton’s position in mid-table, combined with Sunderland’s strong start as a promoted side, sets up a contest shaped by form, history and the hosts’ need for greater consistency.
