Bruno Fernandes Breaks Premier League Single-Season Assist Record After Dorgu Header

Bruno Fernandes set a new Premier League single-season assists record and scored in Manchester United’s 3-0 win at Brighton, moving past Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne while helping secure third place for Michael Carrick’s team.

Fernandes delivered his 21st assist of the league campaign from a 33rd-minute corner, which Patrick Dorgu headed in, before Bryan Mbeumo and Fernandes added further goals as United completed a strong finish to the season under Carrick.

Fernandes breaks Premier League assist record

The United captain created four chances at Brighton, the highest in the match, and increased his season total to 136, more than any other Premier League player this term, while also continuing a personal record of scoring and assisting in 19 league games for the club, a figure only Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs have surpassed.

Fernandes also struck United’s third early in the second half after Mbeumo finished a flowing team move for the second, underlining an attacking influence that combines goal creation and scoring and has been a key feature of United’s late surge up the table since Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim in January.

Across the league season, Fernandes moved clear of Henry and De Bruyne, who both previously set the record with 20 assists, putting Fernandes alone at the top of the competition’s single-season list while extending United’s number of players associated with major Premier League milestones.

The midfielder reflected that the improvement lay not in personal change but in the efficiency of those ahead, pointing out that the number of successful finishes from team-mates had increased, which helped turn long-standing creative output into a record-breaking assist tally.

Reflecting on the feat after being named Premier League Player of the Year earlier in the week, Fernandes said: "It's great [breaking the assists record]. I feel very happy for that. It's a very proud moment, obviously it is not something I would dream or think about until I got this close."

Fernandes, who has long been central to United’s attacking play, added context by stressing the collective element behind the personal landmark, saying: "Today I was lucky enough to get that. Jonny [Evans] believed more than me in that set-piece we prepared for Patrick because I was not so sure he would be able to score with his head. I got my assist but the main thing is we won today and finished very strong."

Asked about moving beyond Henry and De Bruyne, Fernandes highlighted the stature of those names, explaining: "It was already special being in their [Henry and De Bruyne's] company. We are talking about two players that made the Premier League so great, and they were two of the greatest in the Premier League," while also underlining that his approach has stayed constant.

Fernandes then expanded on how the record aligns with his longer-term contribution, stating: "My style of playing has always been the same. Creation has not been something that has changed or improved. The biggest difference is my team-mates have scored more goals than before, and I get the credit for that."

Bruno Fernandes Premier League assists record and Michael Carrick’s view

Carrick, confirmed as United’s permanent boss after his interim spell, praised Fernandes’ display and longer track record, saying: "It's what he's done so often. The creating and scoring of goals is what he has that gift for. He has a natural instinct for creation and he did it again today."

When Carrick took charge in January, United were sixth and already eliminated from both domestic cups, yet a sustained run of league form carried them to third, which Carrick linked to consistent standards, remarking: "We were aiming high, you have to here. We wanted to finish as high as we could," before commending the squad’s response.

Carrick added that steady performances offer a base for future progress, saying the group’s reliability and repeated displays provide a clear structure for next season, while Fernandes’ numbers highlight the level required to challenge towards the top of the Premier League table again.

With Fernandes now leading the single-season assists chart, sitting behind only Rooney and Giggs for United games with both a goal and an assist, and with United climbing from a difficult mid-season position to secure third place, the club enters the next campaign with a proven creative focal point and a recent league run that Carrick describes as a platform to build on.
