Bruno Fernandes led Manchester United to the Europa League quarter-finals with a hat-trick in their 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad. This win secured a 5-2 aggregate triumph. The match at Old Trafford saw Mikel Oyarzabal initially put Sociedad ahead with a penalty, but Fernandes equalised with his own spot-kick and later added another from 12 yards. Diogo Dalot completed the scoring, setting up a clash with Lyon.
Ruben Amorim's team faced an early setback when VAR confirmed Matthijs de Ligt's foul on Oyarzabal, leading to a penalty. Oyarzabal calmly converted in the 14th minute. United responded quickly as Rasmus Hojlund was fouled by Igor Zubeldia, allowing Fernandes to score from the spot six minutes later. This levelled the score and set the stage for an exciting match.
After halftime, United intensified their efforts. Joshua Zirkzee forced a save from Alex Remiro, and Patrick Dorgu won a penalty after colliding with Aritz Elustondo. Fernandes capitalised on this opportunity, sending Remiro the wrong way to give United the lead in the 50th minute. Jon Aramburu was then sent off for a last-man challenge on Dorgu following Zirkzee's pass.
Fernandes nearly took another penalty after Hamari Traore's tackle on Dorgu, but VAR overturned it. However, Fernandes completed his hat-trick soon after by finishing Alejandro Garnacho's pass into the bottom-left corner. Hojlund's unselfish play resulted in Dalot scoring United's fourth goal by firing into the net from close range.
Fernandes' performance was historic as he became only the second Manchester United player to score two penalties in a major European game since Wayne Rooney did so against Otelul Galati in October 2011. Out of his 18 goals for United in major European competitions, 10 have been penalties. He has now contributed to 41 goals (24 goals and 17 assists) in the Europa League, surpassing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's record.
The Portuguese midfielder also became the first United player since Marcus Rashford in October 2020 against RB Leipzig to score a hat-trick in major European competition. His contributions were crucial in securing Manchester United's place in the next round of the tournament.
