Bruno Fernandes faces a rare spell on the sidelines, with Ruben Amorim stressing that Manchester United’s captain must not rush the recovery from a hamstring injury suffered recently in the Premier League.
The Portugal midfielder came off at half-time in United’s 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa, having tried to continue for several minutes before leaving the pitch, and later missed the Boxing Day fixture with Newcastle at Old Trafford.

Amorim has already ruled Fernandes out of United’s next Premier League match, away to Wolves on Tuesday, 30 December 2025, making this one of the longest domestic absences Fernandes has experienced since joining from Sporting CP in January 2020.
Explaining the decision to keep Fernandes out, Amorim said in his pre-match media briefing: "Bruno was already saying that he needs to train, but we don't know, Amorim said in his pre-match press conference. No chance he is going to play against Wolves. No chance. You can write that."
Since arriving at Manchester United in January 2020, Fernandes has never missed more than three Premier League matches in a single campaign, highlighting how unusual this current lay-off is for a player known for constant availability.
The captain’s influence has been consistent this season despite a deeper role, with Fernandes contributing 12 direct goal involvements across league games so far, made up of five goals and seven assists for Amorim’s side.
Across Fernandes’ entire Premier League spell with United, the playmaker has sat out only 10 matches; the team have lost five of those fixtures, showing how often United depend on Fernandes’ presence and creativity in key moments.
Amorim praised Fernandes’ personality and day-to-day influence around the training ground, but also urged a cautious approach as the captain pushes to return quickly from this hamstring issue that has interrupted a long run of availability.
"He cannot be that guy that [when he] is not playing, he's not talking and speaking, Amorim said. He's always speaking. That's why he's the captain. He has bad things sometimes, the way he moves his arms, but he has a lot of good things. Every time he makes recovery from the [previous] game, he is the guy that is going to watch the other guys in training, so there are a lot of things that you guys don't see that he does. He's a great leader."
Fernandes’ current situation was discussed as Amorim addressed the media before the Wolves trip, where the manager outlined the captain’s attitude and injury status while preparing a squad that must adapt in the short term without one of its most trusted players.

The combination of Fernandes’ rare absence, the confirmed miss against Wolves, and the statistical impact during previous games without the captain leaves Manchester United managing both performance and risk, while giving the midfielder time to complete a full and careful recovery.
