BSF beat Hindustan FC 1-0; advance into main round in Durand Cup

By Staff

New Delhi, Oct 25 (UNI) Border Security Force, Jalandhar, beat local outfit Hindustan FC by a solitary last gasp goal to book a place in the main round of the Durand Cup football tournament here today.

In a closely contested final round qualifying match, Gurjeet Singh Atwal found the target in the 89th minute to the disappointment of local supporters at the Ambedkar Stadium.

BSF thus became the first team to book a place in the main round from the 18-team qualifying round.

Both the sides played an open game and action shifted from one end to the other. The securitymen, who had earlier beaten Corps of Signal, Goa, 3-0, could not impose their dominance over the tenacious local side and went to the breather 0-0.

And just as the local side was preparing for extra time, seasoned campaigner Atwal, who had played in the tournament several times, found the target one minute before the final whistle.

Assam Rifles and Jammu and Kashmir Bank will play another final qualifying round match tomorrow for a place in the main round.

Four teams from among 18 will qualify for the main round starting from October 30.
