Burnley have secured the services of Max Weiss, a promising Germany Under-20 goalkeeper, from Karlsruher. This move comes as James Trafford is rumoured to be on Newcastle United's radar. Burnley, who finished second in the Championship last season behind Leeds United, reportedly paid £4.3 million for Weiss. The young goalkeeper featured in all 34 matches for Karlsruher in the 2. Bundesliga during the 2024-25 season.
Weiss expressed his enthusiasm about joining Burnley, stating on the club's website: "I'm really excited to be here. It's an amazing club with a big ambition. All the conversations I have had with people from here have been so good and very positive." At 21 years old, Weiss is Burnley's first signing as they prepare for their return to the Premier League and may take over as their primary goalkeeper if Trafford leaves.

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in acquiring James Trafford for around £40 million. Last season, Trafford achieved an impressive record by keeping 29 clean sheets in 45 Championship games. This feat matched the all-time English Football League record set by Ray King for Port Vale in 1953-54 and Jim Stannard for Gillingham in 1995-96.
The expected goals on target (xGoT) model from Opta highlighted that only Viktor Johansson of Stoke City prevented more goals than Trafford among Championship goalkeepers in the 2024-25 season. Johansson had a figure of 15.8 compared to Trafford's 12.5. Additionally, Trafford boasted an impressive save percentage of 84.5% during this period.
Burnley will kick off their Premier League campaign against Tottenham on August 16. Following this match, they will host Sunderland, another team promoted to the top flight, in their second fixture of the season.
If Trafford departs, Weiss could potentially step into the number one role at Turf Moor. The club is keen to strengthen its squad ahead of competing at a higher level once again.
