Burnley Relegation Fight Intensifies As Parker Focuses On Sunderland Clash

Burnley, 19th in the Premier League, seek their fourth win as Parker emphasises performance over the table ahead of a consequential clash with Sunderland. The hosts have failed to win in 14 league games, while Sunderland sit mid-table with strong home form. The match is pivotal for both sides in their survival and form hopes.

Sunderland aim to protect their strong home record against struggling Burnley, who sit 19th and 10 points from safety. Scott Parker’s side are without a win in 14 Premier League matches, while Sunderland remain unbeaten at home this season but have won only once in their last seven league fixtures.

Burnley trail West Ham by five points in the battle to escape 18th place, underlining the size of the task. Since promotion from the Championship, results have sharply diverged, with Sunderland in 11th and an 18-point gap separating the clubs before this meeting at the Stadium of Light.

Burnley face Sunderland in relegation clash

Parker knows Burnley must quickly claim a fourth league victory to keep survival hopes realistic. "If you look at that table, it doesn't look pretty, but look at the fixtures coming up and ask yourself,'can you pick up some points and get some positive results?'" Parker said. The head coach wants focus on performances rather than standings.

Parker stressed how quickly the picture in the Premier League can shift. "Things can change very quickly, and we've seen that over the course of this year. So that's how we go about it now, and have no focus on the table at the moment." Burnley’s current run is one of the longest without victory in their top-flight history.

Sunderland’s form has dipped, with just one win from seven league games, but home results remain steady. At the Stadium of Light, Sunderland have six wins and five draws from 11 Premier League matches, the only team still unbeaten at home this season, giving Regis Le Bris confidence despite the defeat against West Ham.

Le Bris expects a strong response after that 3-1 loss. "It is always the case," he said. "Emotions are there when you lose, but we have had time to recover and reset. I hope we will be at our best." Sunderland must adapt again without captain Granit Xhaka, who stays unavailable.

Sunderland vs Burnley Premier League team news and key players

Le Bris confirmed Xhaka faces more recovery time. "Granit is doing well," he added. "We will assess him in the next week, but it will probably be three more weeks." Burnley, meanwhile, continue to depend on goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, whose workload highlights the defensive pressure on Parker’s side this season.

Dubravka leads all Premier League goalkeepers with 94 saves so far. Against Tottenham, Dubravka produced nine saves, one short of his personal league best of 10, set versus Liverpool in January 2024. Burnley’s winless sequence now stands at 14 matches, with five draws and nine defeats in that spell.

Parker recognises the challenge of returning to Sunderland, where Burnley won 2-0 at Turf Moor in August. "They've [Sunderland] done incredibly really well. It's a tough place and the stadium is hostile as well, so we know what we're coming up against albeit a very different team. But we've faced them already this year and got a positive result, so we'll be ready."

Sunderland’s main attacking threat is Brian Brobbey, who has three goals in the last four league appearances. Brobbey has the best minutes-per-goal ratio in the squad, scoring every 175 minutes. That is Sunderland’s strongest figure since Jermain Defoe in 2015-16, when Defoe hit 15 goals at a rate of one every 170 minutes.

Sunderland vs Burnley Premier League history and prediction

Historical results at the Stadium of Light lean towards Sunderland. They have lost once in their last 12 home league meetings with Burnley, winning eight and drawing three. That single defeat came in October 2022, a 4-2 reverse in the Championship. Burnley now chase a first league double over Sunderland since the 1972-73 season.

Recent trends suggest a tight contest. Sunderland have lost two of the last three league games, matching their previous 13-match tally of two defeats. However, Sunderland have not lost back-to-back Premier League fixtures this season, sharing that distinction with Arsenal, Brighton and Manchester United. Opta’s model still favours a home win, as shown below.

{TABLE_1}
Result Opta win probability
Sunderland win 53.6%
Draw 23.8%
Burnley win 22.6%

Burnley’s current 14-game winless league run is surpassed in club top-flight history only by a 19-match sequence from February 1889 to February 1890. With Sunderland strong at home and Brobbey in form, and Burnley reliant on Dubravka’s saves, both sides enter this match aware of its importance for their respective seasons.
