In one of the greatest fairytale stories in FIFA World Cup history, Cabo Verde have advanced to the Round of 32 on their tournament debut.

The Blue Sharks secured qualification with a disciplined 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia at Houston Stadium, finishing second in Group H.

The tiny African country also remained unbeaten in the group stages to complete a major feat, as they have toppled former World Champions like Uruguay to cement their place in the knockouts.

Cabo Verde became the smallest nation by population (approximately 525,000–600,000) ever to reach the knockout stage of a World Cup. They are also the first debutant nation since Senegal in 2002 to remain unbeaten through the entire group stage.

This remarkable achievement follows their qualification for the finals on October 13, 2025, secured with a 3-0 victory over Eswatini that topped their CAF qualifying group. As one of the smallest countries by land area to compete at the global stage, the Blue Sharks have defied all expectations.

Under coach Bubista, Cabo Verde showcased outstanding organization and resilience.
