Calafiori Returns To Arsenal Squad As He Recovers From Injury Ahead Of North London Derby

Riccardo Calafiori has returned to Arsenal after leaving Italy's training camp due to a hip injury. He aims to participate in the upcoming north London derby against Tottenham.

Riccardo Calafiori has returned to Arsenal from Italy's training camp due to a hip injury. He missed Italy's 2-0 victory over Moldova and will also be absent for their World Cup qualifier against Norway. Calafiori has been a key player for Arsenal, starting all 11 Premier League matches this season, contributing one goal and two assists, and appearing in one Champions League game.

Calafiori's absence is a setback for Italy as they prepare for their final World Cup qualifying match against Norway. Head coach Gennaro Gattuso explained that Calafiori attempted to regain fitness but was unable to do so. "We tried Calafiori, he had a few issues," Gattuso told Sky Sports Italia. "I thank him for his commitment: he stayed here for a week, he could have played perhaps, but it wouldn't have been fair to him or Arsenal."

Calafiori Back in Arsenal Squad for Derby

The defender has been instrumental in Arsenal's impressive defensive record, helping the team achieve eight consecutive clean sheets across all competitions. His influence extends beyond defence; only Viktor Gyokeres has taken more shots in the Premier League for Arsenal than Calafiori, who has 19 attempts. In terms of expected goals (xG), only Gyokeres and Bukayo Saka surpass his 2.21 xG.

Mikel Arteta's squad faces Tottenham on November 23 after the international break, followed by challenging matches against Bayern Munich and Chelsea. Arsenal hopes to welcome back Kai Havertz, Noni Madueke, Martin Odegaard, and Gabriel Martinelli from injuries in time for these fixtures.

With Calafiori unavailable, Gattuso must decide between Gianluca Mancini and Alessandro Buongiorno to fill the defensive gap against Norway. The coach appreciates Calafiori's dedication despite his injury struggles during the training camp.

Calafiori's return to club duties comes at a crucial time as Arsenal prepares for significant upcoming matches. His performance has been vital both defensively and offensively this season. The team looks forward to having him back in action once he recovers fully from his hip issue.
