Callum Wilson Departs Newcastle United As Free Agent After Successful Five-Year Tenure

Callum Wilson has confirmed his departure from Newcastle United after five successful years. He scored 49 goals and contributed to the club's revival. Future options include MLS teams and Leeds United.

Callum Wilson has announced his departure from Newcastle United after five years, leaving as a free agent. He joined the club from Bournemouth in September 2020 for £20 million. During his initial seasons, Newcastle struggled to stay in the Premier League. However, a significant change occurred in 2021 with a takeover by a consortium led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

The arrival of Eddie Howe as manager marked a turning point for Newcastle. Under his leadership, the team experienced a resurgence. Wilson's standout season came when they qualified for the Champions League in 2022-23. That year, he scored 18 goals in the Premier League and played in the EFL Cup final, although they lost 2-0 to Manchester United.

Wilson Leaves Newcastle United on Free Transfer

Two years later, Wilson was part of the squad that ended Newcastle's 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy with a 2-0 victory over Liverpool in the same competition. Over his time at Newcastle, Wilson scored 49 goals in 130 appearances. Despite his contributions, the club couldn't agree on new terms before his contract expired last week.

In a farewell message on X, Wilson expressed gratitude: "To all you Magpies... It's time to say goodbye after an unbelievable few years in the Toon. Thank you for everything." He cherished wearing the iconic number nine shirt and scoring at the Gallowgate End, which he described as special.

Wilson is reportedly attracting interest from several MLS teams and Leeds United as they prepare for their Premier League return. In the 2024-25 season, he didn't score in 18 league appearances while serving as backup to Alexander Isak. Despite this, Newcastle secured fifth place and another Champions League spot.

Throughout his tenure with Newcastle, Wilson consistently scored at least eight goals each season during his first four years. However, injuries limited him to no more than 23 starts per campaign. His most active season was 2020-21 when he played over 2,000 minutes (2,085) in the Premier League.

Reflecting on Achievements

In subsequent seasons, Wilson's playing time decreased due to injuries: he logged 1,388 minutes in 2021-22, 1,885 minutes in 2022-23, only 984 minutes in 2023-24, and just 357 minutes in his final season with Newcastle. Despite these challenges, Wilson remains proud of contributing to Newcastle's history.

Wilson concluded his farewell message by stating that Newcastle United will always hold a special place in his heart and that of his family: "Thank you for the memories." His departure marks the end of an era for both him and the club.
