Can Ruud Van Nistelrooy Lead Manchester United To Victory Against Chelsea?

Ruud van Nistelrooy steps in as interim manager for Manchester United amid a challenging season. With a recent win and a match against Chelsea ahead, can he restore confidence and improve their standings in the Premier League?

Manchester United have parted ways with Erik ten Hag, following a challenging period after their FA Cup victory. Ruud van Nistelrooy, a club legend, has taken over temporarily. The club is actively pursuing Ruben Amorim from Sporting CP as a permanent replacement. Amorim is expected to clarify his future after Sporting's league match on Friday. Meanwhile, Van Nistelrooy will lead the team against Chelsea on Sunday.

United's recent home performances against Chelsea have been strong, remaining unbeaten in their last 11 league encounters at Old Trafford. They aim to secure three consecutive home wins against Chelsea for the first time since 1957. However, this season has been tough, with United earning only 11 points from nine matches, their second-lowest tally at this stage.

Van Nistelrooy Aims to Revive United's Season

The Red Devils have faced difficulties in recent Premier League seasons, losing four of their first nine games twice under Ten Hag. Their previous meeting with Chelsea ended in a thrilling 4-3 loss at Stamford Bridge in April. Historically, United vs Chelsea is the most drawn fixture in Premier League history, with 26 of 64 matches ending level.

The Opta supercomputer predicts a close contest this time around. In simulations, United emerged victorious in 37.8% of scenarios, while Chelsea won in 37.3%. The probability of a draw stands at 24.9%. Ten Hag had a challenging tenure at United, losing 32% of his Premier League games, equalling David Moyes' record.

Under Enzo Maresca's guidance, Chelsea have excelled offensively this season, scoring 19 goals in the league so far. Only Manchester City have scored more. Chelsea also boast the third-highest expected goals (xG) tally in the league. Despite a setback against Liverpool in their last away game, Maresca's youthful squad remains fearless.

Chelsea have fielded the youngest average starting XI this season at 23 years and 206 days old. In their win over Newcastle, they became only the second team to start without an outfield player aged over 25 since Aston Villa did so twice in 2013.

Key Players to Watch

Bruno Fernandes continues to be pivotal for Manchester United. Against Leicester City, he reached his 150th and 151st goal involvements for the club since joining Europe's top five leagues. He is the first midfielder to achieve this milestone.

Cole Palmer has been instrumental for Chelsea this year with direct involvement in 33 Premier League goals (21 goals and 12 assists). Only Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Didier Drogba have achieved more goals and assists for Chelsea in a calendar year.

Palmer scored against United twice last season and aims to join Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Juan Mata as players who scored in three consecutive Premier League games against them.

This match offers Van Nistelrooy an opportunity to rejuvenate Manchester United's spirits at Old Trafford amid ongoing challenges with scoring efficiency. With only eight goals scored this season and underperforming their expected goals by 6.8, they need improvement.
