Canada progressed to the knockout stages of the Paris Olympics with a 1-0 win over Colombia in Marseille. Despite winning both group matches, they were penalised six points for using a drone to spy on New Zealand's training. This led to head coach Bev Priestman being banned from football activities for a year, and their appeal was rejected.
Vanessa Gilles' header made the difference as she connected with Jessie Fleming's corner kick in the 61st minute. Canada, despite earning only three points from their group games, joined Spain and the United States as the only teams to win all their matches so far. Colombia, initially second, finished third but advanced as one of the best third-placed teams and will face Spain next.

In another Group A match, hosts France confirmed their place in the knockout stages with a 2-1 victory over New Zealand. Marie-Antoinette Katoto opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, but Kate Taylor equalised for New Zealand just before halftime. Katoto scored her second double of the tournament late on, bringing her tally to five goals at the Games and securing top spot for France.
France will play Brazil next Saturday in Nantes. Brazil will be without veteran striker Marta following her red card against Spain earlier in the day.
Canada will continue their quest for a second Olympic triumph at Parc des Princes on Saturday against Germany. The defending champions are determined to overcome all obstacles and retain their title.
