Canada Ready To Go For It In Last-32 Run After Swiss Defeat, Marsch Says

Canada slipped to second in Group B after a 2-1 defeat to Switzerland but still advanced to the World Cup knockout stage, losing the chance to play in Vancouver and instead heading to Los Angeles, while Switzerland moved top and secured a round-of-32 tie against one of the best third-place teams.

Canada entered the final group match knowing a draw against Switzerland would seal first place and guarantee a historic home knockout tie in Vancouver. That plan collapsed after half-time, when Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi scored in quick succession, leaving Promise David’s reply as only a consolation.

Despite the defeat, Canada reached the World Cup round of 32 for the first time, qualifying with four points from three games, with a record of one win, one draw and one loss. That tally matched the United States in 1994 as the lowest total for a host nation progressing from the group stage.

History offered little comfort for Canada, who have now lost three World Cup matches in a row when level at half-time, repeating a pattern seen against France and Russia in 1986. Yet the team still achieved a major landmark by advancing, even if the reward is an away trip to the United States.

"Look, it's been awesome, and that's the disappointment, is we just want to continue the energy that's taken place here in Canada," he said on ITV. "I've been through these World Cups, and I've been through different big moments in my career, and I know that when you get one big win, like building on that is so important. I'm disappointed that we weren't able to get a win or a draw to keep us here. I'm so thankful for the energy in the country, and certainly in the stadium here. But we're going to go to LA, we're going to go where it's probably going to be an away crowd, and it'll be a little bit tougher, but we still want to electrify our country and play really well down there, and go after it. Still, we're exactly where we want to be. We finished second in the group, we're in the knockout phase, and now let's go for it."

Switzerland’s victory not only overtook Canada in Group B but also delivered a potentially favourable round-of-32 draw, as Murat Yakin’s team will now face one of the best third-place finishers, extending Switzerland’s run of group-stage progress to four consecutive World Cups spanning 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026.

This is also just the second time Switzerland have topped their World Cup group, after first doing so in 2006. Their push for first place turned on a devastating spell straight after the interval, when Vargas scored 39 seconds into the second half, followed quickly by another strike from Manzambi.

Vargas’ effort was recorded as the fastest goal scored immediately after a break at a World Cup since Daniel Agger’s own goal for Denmark against the Netherlands in 2010, which arrived after 32 seconds, while Manzambi’s finish was the forward’s third of this tournament, underlining a consistent threat in front of goal.

"We made life a bit difficult for ourselves. But it was a solid team performance," he said. "We got off to a great start in the second half with the two goals. The opponent then opened up and brought on attacking players, which made things a bit difficult for us. We lost possession somewhat carelessly and gave them even more hope. But in the end, we saw it through, and that's the most important thing. Now we can enjoy this moment of being top of the table. Now we first have to wait and see which opponent we have. With such large distances, two or three days of rest are certainly important."

Canada now prepare for a World Cup knockout stage debut on United States soil, aiming to channel the support built across the country despite leaving Vancouver behind, while Switzerland carry momentum and seeding advantage into another last-16 campaign after controlling a decisive group match with clinical finishing and a decisive start to the second half.
