Canada Substitutes Secure 2-0 Win As World Cup Prep Continues In Edmonton

Canada recorded a 2-0 win over Uzbekistan in Edmonton, yet the performance raised questions ahead of the World Cup. Second-half substitutes Jonathan Osorio and Jayden Nelson scored the goals, but Canada lacked fluency for long spells. Co-hosts Canada continued preparations for Group B, while Alphonso Davies watched from the sidelines with a hamstring concern.

Jesse Marsch named Jonathan David and Tajon Buchanan in the starting side, though the attack struggled to click before the break. Canada produced only three shots and 0.14 expected goals in that period. Both teams registered one effort on target, with Uzbekistan captain Eldor Shomurodov twice threatening to punish the hosts.

Canada reshaped the team at half-time and immediately looked sharper, creating seven attempts and 0.58 expected goals after the restart. The breakthrough arrived just before the hour. Substitute Tani Oluwaseyi carried the ball to the edge of the area, laid it off, and Osorio’s driven strike beat Abduvokhid Ne’matov with sheer power.

Key attacking numbers from Canada’s friendly against Uzbekistan reflected the stronger second-half display.

Team / Period Shots Expected Goals (xG)
Canada – First half 3 0.14
Canada – Second half 7 0.58

Shomurodov had earlier squandered the best early chance when racing clear in the seventh minute and miscuing a lob wide of Maxime Crepeau’s goal. Another opening saw Shomurodov denied by a full-stretch stop from the Canada goalkeeper. After Osorio scored, Promise David thought a near-post finish marked a successful return from injury, but the assistant flagged offside.

Oluwaseyi then had a close-range shot smothered by Abduvokhid Ne’matov before Canada finally sealed the result in stoppage time. One minute into added time, Oluwaseyi timed a pass into space for Nelson on the outside. The Austin FC player opened Nelson’s body and rolled a composed low strike into the far corner.

All three players with a goal involvement – Osorio, Nelson and Oluwaseyi – came from the bench, underlining Canada’s depth options. Oluwaseyi led all players with four shots and created two chances, second only to Jonathan David’s three. Davies, in hometown Edmonton, did not feature and remains doubtful for Canada’s Group B opener against Bosnia-Herzegovina as the co-hosts continue World Cup preparations.
