India's upcoming match against Syria is set to kick off at the GMC Balayogi Athletic Stadium on Monday, September 9, 2024, at 7:30 PM IST. Fans can catch the live action on Sports 18 3 or stream it via Jio Cinema.
This fixture marks another opportunity for the Blue Tigers to build momentum as they inch closer to their primary target: the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers. The 2024 Intercontinental Cup has not only been a significant tournament for Indian football but has also marked a special moment for defender Rahul Bheke.

Bheke was given the captain's armband during their match against Mauritius. Reflecting on the experience, Bheke emphasized the importance of staying focused on the team's long-term goals.
"From the first meeting, the coach made it clear that our main goal is the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers in March," talking to the AIFF media, said Bheke, "we need to be fully prepared by then, and the September, October, and November FIFA International Windows will help us fine-tune our performance. The coaches have been providing us with valuable information, and we need to reflect that on the pitch come March."
While qualifying for the Asian Cup remains a key focus, Bheke stressed that simply reaching the tournament is not enough. "We've already qualified for the last two Asian Cups, which is a huge achievement. But now, the goal is to move past the group stage and reach the knockout rounds."
Looking ahead to the match against Syria, Bheke acknowledged the challenge but remained confident about India's prospects. "It's a must-win game for us, especially since we're playing at home. We've made progress in our recent matches, but we need to keep improving and win this one."
For Bheke, who made his debut in 2019, being named captain was a significant responsibility. "When the coach told me in training the day before, I was thrilled but knew I had to stay focused. I didn't even tell my family. When I finally received the armband in the dressing room, it was a moment of great responsibility."
With India scoring only two goals in eight matches so far this year, many are questioning who will step up to fill the void left by former captain Sunil Chhetri. However, Bheke believes it's a collective effort: "It's not just about the strikers. Everyone, including midfielders and defenders, needs to contribute. If we work as a team, we can fill Sunil's big shoes together."
