Michael Carrick Cautions Against Overconfidence After Middlesbrough's Victory Over Blackburn Rovers

Following Middlesbrough's 2-1 win against Blackburn Rovers, manager Michael Carrick urged caution regarding play-off ambitions, advocating for a focused approach in upcoming matches.

Middlesbrough's recent 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers propelled them into the Championship's top six. Despite this success, Michael Carrick remains cautious about their prospects. "Let's not get too carried away, there is a lot to go," he stated, emphasising the importance of focusing on each game individually. Middlesbrough last played in the Premier League during the 2016-17 season and are now eyeing a return.

Tommy Conway quickly put Middlesbrough ahead by flicking Kelechi Iheanacho's pass over Joe Rankin-Costello and finishing past Aynsley Pears. Just minutes later, Samuel Iling-Junior scored with a deflected shot after being set up by Iheanacho. This early lead proved decisive for Boro, who now sit fifth in the standings. However, Coventry City, West Bromwich Albion, and Bristol City could surpass them with upcoming matches.

Carrick Warns Against Overconfidence After Win

Blackburn Rovers' struggles persist as they endure a five-game losing streak, their worst since February 2021 under Tony Mowbray. Fans expressed their dissatisfaction towards the club's leadership during the match. Despite calls from supporters to stay away, Steve Waggott, Suhail Pasha, and Rudy Gestede attended the game. Valerien Ismael remains optimistic despite these challenges.

"We want to start the game well and it puts you in a difficult situation [conceding after 74 seconds]. We can avoid the goal. We lost two important duels," Ismael commented on their performance. He believes that luck has not been on their side lately but remains hopeful for improvement in future matches.

Carrick is determined to keep Middlesbrough grounded despite their recent success. "I'm old enough and ugly enough to know what the end of this season brings," he remarked. The team is preparing for another crucial match on Tuesday night as they aim to maintain their position in the league table.

Ismael noted that Blackburn had opportunities to score but lacked fortune at crucial moments. "The first mistake you make or the opponent's first shot goes in the goal, so it's difficult," he explained. The team aims to improve its focus and belief as they work towards better results in upcoming fixtures.

Middlesbrough's win against Blackburn highlights their potential for promotion this season. However, Carrick stresses taking each match as it comes without getting ahead of themselves. As they continue their campaign, maintaining consistency will be key to achieving their goals.
