Lewis-Skelly Primed To Make Arsenal Impact As Carsley Warns Of Readiness

England Under-21s head coach Lee Carsley believes Myles Lewis-Skelly will be fully prepared if Mikel Arteta turns to the midfielder during Arsenal’s crowded run-in. Lewis-Skelly has slipped down the order this season, yet Carsley feels recent international minutes have kept the 2024-25 breakthrough player in sharp condition for club duty.

Arsenal remain involved on three fronts after the international break, despite losing the EFL Cup final to Manchester City. Arsenal lead the Premier League by nine points with seven matches left. Arsenal are also into the FA Cup quarter-finals and the Champions League quarter-finals, so rotation options such as Lewis-Skelly may still have significant roles.

Lewis-Skelly ready to impact Arsenal

Lewis-Skelly enjoyed a rapid rise during the 2024-25 campaign, earning a first senior England call-up. This season has been different, as competition for places at Arsenal has increased. Lewis-Skelly has played 27 games in all competitions, starting only 12. The midfielder has logged 1,298 minutes, mainly in Champions League fixtures, contributing four assists from 14 chances created.

Key 2025-26 club numbers for Lewis-Skelly are shown below, underlining reduced but productive involvement for Arsenal compared with the previous breakthrough year.

Competition Appearances Starts Minutes Assists Chances Created

Because regular starts have been limited, Lewis-Skelly chose to join England Under-21s for this camp instead of remaining around the senior group. Carsley supports that call, viewing it as beneficial for Arsenal and England. "He's shown such a great attitude, and it's really benefited him this week, playing minutes and training at a good level," Carsley said.

Carsley highlighted Lewis-Skelly’s mindset and willingness to drop back a level to keep progressing. "We look at attitude, we look at the desire to play, and he was really enthusiastic about coming to the 21s. He sees that potentially as a route into getting minutes and then potentially going to play for Arsenal and then England."

Carsley also pointed to how quickly Lewis-Skelly’s career has moved and the challenges that followed. "He had such a rise so quickly, and this is football. This is what happens. There is lots of ups and downs, but he's responded well to it this camp. I think you can train all you want, but there is nothing like match minutes where you are competing against someone and the intensity of it. The fact now that he's potentially going back, having played a lot of minutes for England, puts him [in] a strong position where, if he is called upon or gets a chance, he is ready to go. He doesn't [now] need one or two games, which you don't get at that level, to bed in."

Carsley’s comments suggest Lewis-Skelly returns to Arsenal with rhythm and confidence, even without regular starts. With Arsenal contesting the Premier League title and two cup competitions, the midfielder’s recent England Under-21 exposure may keep Lewis-Skelly well placed to answer if Arteta requires extra energy in midfield.
