Cech to Scholes: Five players who played with serious medical conditions

There are several footballers who have defied the odds over the years and have made it to the top despite having medical conditions.

Bengaluru, February 22: Football is the most followed sport in the world and there is no other sports in the world that has so much attention across the globe.

It is an extremely demanding sport as it requires lot of physical fitness. However, there are several footballers who have defied the odds over the years and have made it to the top despite having medical conditions.

Here are five footballers who have played with some of the most serious medical conditions.

David de Gea - Myopia

David de Gea is one of the best goalkeepers of the modern era and has been one of the best players for Manchester United during their tough times.

The Spaniard is one of the best shot-stoppers in world football. However, De Gea has managed to make a name for himself despite having condition known as Myopia. He has worn glasses almost all his life.

Sir Alex Ferguson didn't want to take any chances with De Gea and booked the Spanish goalkeeper for a laser surgery in the summer of 2012. Since then, he has only become better and has cemented his legacy as one of the greatest goalkeepers in the world.

David Beckham - Asthma

One of the greatest players to have played for Manchester United and England, David Beckham suffered from asthma. It is truly ironic that being an asthmatic patient, he was one of the best wingers of his time.

Petr Cech - Head injury

Petr Cech is famous for playing with a rugby-style head guard, making him one of the most recognizable players in the world. He started wearing it following a life-threatening injury he suffered back in 2006 having collided with Reading's Stephen Hunt.

He was diagnosed with a 3rd-degree skull fracture but he came back from such a massive blow and established himself as one of the best keepers in the world.

Paul Scholes - Blocked vein in the right eye

Another former Manchester United player makes this list as Paul Scholes played a part of his career with one bad eye.

Known for his exquisite technique and vision, Scholes if regarded as one of the finest midfielders of all time. However, he was diagnosed with a blocked vein, which caused internal bleeding in his right eye.

Edgar Davids - Glaucoma

Edgar Davids was one of the most recognizable players as he wore glasses while playing. This was due to a medical condition called Glaucoma, where the optic nerve in the eye gets damaged due to genetic or other reasons, limiting the vision.

The condition has no particular cure and can only be controlled. The Dutchman still managed to make it to the top despite such conditions.
