Celtic Defender Cameron Carter-Vickers Aims To Return To Football After Long-Term Injury

Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers is back on the pitch and focused only on playing again after a long lay-off. The centre-back returned in a pre-season friendly against Shelbourne, starting the match and completing 45 minutes. Carter-Vickers missed most of Celtic's double-winning 2025-26 campaign with a serious Achilles injury. The United States international now aims to rebuild sharpness before the new Scottish Premiership season.

Carter-Vickers expressed relief at rejoining team-mates during the club’s summer schedule and spoke about the simple target now driving preparations. "I'm good, and I'm just happy to be back with the team and out here in pre-season," Carter-Vickers told CelticPlayer. The defender described the recent weeks as an important step as training intensity increases. Match situations are now central to Carter-Vickers’ recovery work and fitness programme.

Celtic's Carter-Vickers back to football

The defender first felt the problem in October during Celtic’s 2025-26 campaign, initially believing it was minor. Carter-Vickers recalled the moment the medical team confirmed the full extent of the damage. "At first, I thought I had cramp in my calf. When the physios saw it, they said it was a rupture in the Achilles. At that point you know it's going to be a long-term injury." The diagnosis ended his season.

Time on the sidelines proved difficult, especially as Celtic were locked in a tight title race. "Being out was frustrating, especially a season like last season where it was a battle for us." Carter-Vickers could only watch as the squad adjusted under Martin O'Neill and pushed for trophies. The defender had featured regularly since arriving before the 2021-22 season, winning five Scottish Premiership titles.

Carter-Vickers rejoined training in the closing weeks of the 2025-26 season, though work remained limited. Sessions were lighter because of the stage of the campaign and the demands on the squad. "I trained the last couple of weeks of the season last season, but obviously they were fairly light just due to where we were in the season." Contact work and full drills have increased during the recent pre-season block.

The defender underlined how competitive matches are vital for full fitness after months of rehabilitation. "You can do as much running and fitness work as you want individually, but it doesn't compare to playing football, just getting back in the rhythm of that." Carter-Vickers added another clear target. "I just want to get back to playing football, really." Building sharpness remains the main focus across pre-season sessions.

Celtic’s summer schedule continues with high-profile tests against Sporting CP, Middlesbrough and AC Milan. These fixtures lead into the start of the 2026-27 Scottish Premiership campaign, with Dundee FC visiting Celtic on 3 August. The meetings with European opposition offer further chances for Carter-Vickers to increase minutes. Celtic also use these matches to refine structure after last season’s league and cup success.

Carter-Vickers watched from the stands as Celtic completed a tense domestic double under Martin O'Neill. Celtic secured the Scottish Premiership title on the final day with a 3-1 victory over Hearts. The team then repeated the 3-1 scoreline against Dunfermline in the Scottish Cup final. Those matches reinforced Carter-Vickers’ desire to contribute again, which adds extra motivation for the coming season.

The Shelbourne friendly marked a key stage in Carter-Vickers’ comeback and provided important competitive action. Featuring for 45 minutes allowed Celtic staff to assess progress from the Achilles rupture sustained in October. "So it's been good this last couple of weeks to get back to playing football. For me, it's just about doing that, really, and trying to get as sharp as possible." Both club and defender now look towards sustained involvement across 2026-27.
