Celtic triumphed in the Scottish League Cup final, defeating Rangers on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw over 120 minutes. Brendan Rodgers praised his team's resilience as they secured their 22nd title in this competition and their 199th overall. Kasper Schmeichel's crucial save against Ridvan Yilmaz set up Daizen Maeda to net the winning penalty.

Rodgers expressed his delight with Celtic's performance, especially their ability to overturn a 1-0 halftime deficit by scoring twice early in the second half. "Great game to be involved in. It's what you expect in a final," Rodgers said. He acknowledged the significance of the match for both sets of fans, emphasising his consistent preparation approach.

Celtic Wins Scottish League Cup on Penalties

Rangers had initially taken control with a lead at halftime, but Celtic's spirited comeback changed the game's dynamics. Rodgers highlighted his players' composure during penalties, stating that the ultimate goal was to stand victorious on the podium. "The guys showed big heart to come back from being behind in the game and then to show that composure in the penalties," he added.

Philippe Clement expressed disappointment over a key penalty decision that he believed affected Rangers' chances of retaining their title. Despite equalising twice during regular time, Rangers missed an opportunity in extra time when Liam Scales fouled Vaclav Cerny near the penalty area. Clement was frustrated by the lack of VAR intervention.

Reflecting on the match, Clement remarked, "Football can be amazing fun, but it can be very cruel." He felt his team deserved more given their numerous chances and comeback efforts. The penalty shootout loss felt like a gamble to him, leaving him inundated with messages about the controversial penalty incident involving Cerny.

When asked if anyone had witnessed the incident, one reporter confirmed it occurred on the line. Clement responded, "So, it's a penalty then." His comments underscored his belief that this moment was pivotal in determining the outcome of the match.

The intense rivalry between Celtic and Rangers delivered another memorable encounter for fans. Both teams showcased skill and determination throughout, but it was Celtic who emerged victorious under pressure. This victory adds another chapter to their storied history and highlights their ability to perform when it matters most.
