Celtic Capitalises On Hearts' Slip With Victory Over Hibernian; Rangers Held To Goalless Draw

Celtic secured a crucial win against Hibernian, moving closer to the top of the Scottish Premiership. Meanwhile, Rangers were unable to overcome Falkirk in a disappointing draw.

Celtic secured a 2-1 victory over Hibernian, moving them within two points of Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts. Daizen Maeda and Arne Engels scored within 33 seconds in the first half. This win came after Hearts were held to a goalless draw by Motherwell. Celtic capitalised on this slip-up at Easter Road, maintaining their strong position in the league.

Maeda's goal came in the 27th minute after Reo Hatate intercepted a poor clearance from Raphael Sallinger. Shortly after, Engels scored with a header from Hyun-Jun Yang's cross, despite taking a boot to the face. Martin Boyle managed to pull one back for Hibernian with a penalty after Liam Scales handled the ball in the second half.

Celtic Wins as Rangers Draw in Premiership

Celtic have now gone 41 Premiership matches unbeaten when leading at halftime, with 37 wins and three draws since their last defeat against Kilmarnock in December 2023. Despite Boyle's penalty, Celtic held firm, showcasing their resilience under interim manager Martin O'Neill. O'Neill is expected to remain in charge for the upcoming match against Dundee as paperwork for new boss Wilfried Nancy is finalised.

In contrast, Rangers had a frustrating day as they were held to a goalless draw by Falkirk at Ibrox. Danny Rohl's team remains nine points behind Hearts but has a game in hand. They are also seven points adrift of rivals Celtic. Despite having an xG of 2.00 compared to Falkirk's 0.13 and dominating with 14 shots, Rangers failed to convert their chances into goals.

Referee Nick Walsh awarded three penalties in eight Premiership games this season, with only John Beaton and Calum Scott awarding more. This highlights the ongoing scrutiny over penalty decisions in the league. Meanwhile, Celtic's ability to maintain their lead despite conceding a penalty demonstrates their defensive strength and strategic gameplay.

This victory reinforces Celtic’s strong position as they continue their pursuit of the top spot in the league standings. With consistent performances and strategic management, they remain formidable contenders for the title this season.
