Wilfried Nancy is optimistic about his early days as Celtic's manager. He believes his team is already adapting to his tactical changes. Nancy took over from Brendan Rodgers earlier this month and led his first match on Sunday, which resulted in a 2-1 loss to Hearts. Now, he prepares for a European challenge as Celtic faces Roma in the Europa League on Thursday.

Celtic has faced Italian teams 33 times in major European competitions, but this will be their first encounter with Roma, managed by Gian Piero Gasperini. The Scottish side has only won twice against Italian opposition in their last 16 meetings, both victories coming against Lazio during the 2019-20 Europa League season. Nancy hopes to improve this record.

Nancy was encouraged by Celtic's performance despite the defeat to Hearts. The team registered an expected goals (xG) total of 1.86 from 15 shots compared to Hearts' 0.5 from eight attempts. "At the weekend, we had good moments with and without the ball," Nancy told reporters. He expressed satisfaction with the players' willingness to connect and play cohesively.

The manager emphasised that finding solutions and prioritising them is crucial in his role. "Obviously, I cannot show everything since I've come here, but the idea is to prioritise," he stated. Nancy was particularly pleased with a recent training session that mirrored those he conducted with previous teams, noting its quality as a positive sign of player adaptability.

Nancy addressed discussions about his use of a tactics board during the Hearts match, which left Celtic three points behind the Scottish Premiership leaders after 15 games. Images of him instructing players mid-game circulated online, but Nancy remains unfazed by public scrutiny. "When I had the opportunity to become a coach...I always told myself that when you become a coach, cut everything," he explained.

He elaborated on ignoring social media chatter: "On Twitter, I cut everything...because they have the right to say something." Nancy focuses on controlling what he can within his team and club environment to maximise performance and chances of winning games.

Celtic currently sits 21st in the Europa League standings with seven points from five matches. A victory against Roma would significantly enhance their prospects for a play-off spot. Despite external opinions on his methods or attire, Nancy remains committed to what works best for him and his team.

Nancy's approach reflects his experience as an assistant coach for seven years before taking on head coaching roles. He values focusing on internal dynamics over external opinions: "I control what I can control...to be good with my players." This mindset helps him maintain focus amid varying public perceptions.
