Celtic V Stuttgart: O'Neill Foresees A Challenging Europa League Playoff Test

Martin O'Neill expects a stern test as Celtic host Stuttgart in the Europa League playoff. The Celtic boss emphasises Stuttgart's strength and European pedigree while aiming to maintain momentum after a late league win. The tie marks a high-stakes return to knockout football for the Bhoys.

Celtic prepare for another major European test at Celtic Park, with Martin O'Neill targeting a strong first-leg result against Stuttgart in the Europa League play-off. The Scottish side ended the 36-team league phase in 21st place, while Sebastian Hoeness guided Stuttgart to 11th, and the visitors currently sit fourth in the Bundesliga.

O'Neill stressed that expectations must stay realistic, despite Celtic arriving on a high after a dramatic league win. Julian Araujo struck in the 97th minute to defeat Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership, yet O'Neill underlined the step up in level that awaits when facing a top Bundesliga team in Europe.

Celtic face Stuttgart in tough Europa League

The clubs share notable European history, most memorably from the 2002-03 UEFA Cup. That season, Celtic, then also led by O'Neill, eliminated Stuttgart 5-4 on aggregate in the last 16, winning 3-1 at home before losing 3-2 away, and that tie still shapes discussion around this new encounter.

Stuttgart, however, bring their own European story into this meeting. The German side are playing a first major European knockout tie since the 2012-13 Europa League, when Lazio won 5-1 on aggregate in the last 16. Stuttgart have taken only one victory from their last 11 knockout games, drawing three and losing seven.

Celtic's record at Celtic Park in knockout ties has been challenging in recent years. The team have won only one of the last 10 home games in the knockout rounds of major European competitions, drawing three and losing six. Each of their previous four such matches at home ended in defeat, with at least two goals conceded every time.

Stuttgart also carry mixed results when travelling to Scotland. Between 1964 and 2007, the German club lost five straight away European fixtures against Scottish opposition. That sequence ended in November 2009, when Stuttgart beat Rangers 2-0 in a Champions League group match, which remains their most recent competitive visit to the country.

O'Neill made clear how demanding he expects this Europa League tie to be against a squad built in the Bundesliga. "This game will be exceptionally difficult for us. The Bundesliga is very strong they're competitive, they're strong, they're agile and their fitness regimes are big," O'Neill said. "We've done it [reached the knockout phase], even if it is only for another two games [after all]. I don't want to lose that [spirit] there. Celtic, as you well know, and Rangers are really built on big European nights."

Since returning for a second spell this season, O'Neill has brought an immediate response in results. Celtic have won eight of 10 matches in all competitions under O'Neill during this period. That run adds belief, yet the manager repeatedly referenced previous European experiences as a reminder that progress in continental football rarely comes easily.

O'Neill reflected on his earlier matches in charge during the 2025-26 campaign, drawing lessons from contrasting European nights. Celtic lost 3-1 away to Midtjylland in that spell, which O'Neill described as a harsh experience, yet performances against Feyenoord and Bologna gave the manager confidence that the squad can compete with strong European opposition.

"My first European game [back] at Celtic was Midtjylland, and they absolutely mauled us," O'Neill said. "Butthen we go to Feyenoord and get a great result and play really, really well, and then, we fight with Bolognaten men for 60-odd minutes of the gameand I think, well, you know, I don't want to throw those performances and not try to qualify."

As Stuttgart arrive for the first leg of this Europa League play-off, both teams carry mixed recent records in continental knockout football. Celtic seek to reverse a poor home run while drawing on improved domestic form and O'Neill's experience, whereas Stuttgart aim to translate strong Bundesliga results into progress on the European stage.
