CFL 2024: East Bengal Held to Frustrating Draw by Calcutta Customs Days after Kolkata Derby Win

By MyKhel Staff

CFL 2024: East Bengal faced Calcutta Customs at the Bankimanjali Stadium in Naihati on July 16, Tuesday, hoping to build on their momentum after a victory in the Kolkata Derby.

However, their efforts were thwarted as they were held to a goalless draw, leaving both teams in their respective positions on the points table. The stalemate means East Bengal remain in second place, while Calcutta Customs hold on to third.

Group B toppers Bhawanipore extended their lead with a 2-0 win over Rainbow AC.

The match was a tale of missed opportunities and resolute defending. East Bengal, buoyed by their recent derby success, dominated possession and created numerous chances but failed to convert any into goals. The first half ended without a breakthrough, with Customs' defense standing firm against the Red and Gold Brigade's persistent attacks.

The second half saw East Bengal intensify their efforts, making two changes at halftime by bringing on PV Vishnu and Sayan Banerjee to add more firepower to their attack. Despite this, Customs goalkeeper Suvam Sen was in fine form and dominated the box. In fact, East Bengal struggled to create enough quality chances in front of a stubborn Customs defense.

Throughout the match, East Bengal's frustration grew as Customs defended deep and looked to hit on the counter. Customs' Robi Hansda came close to scoring from a free-kick, narrowly missing the target.

In the closing stages, East Bengal threw everything at the Customs' goal, with PV Vishnu flashing a shot across the goal and Hira Mondal missing a key chance from inside the box.

Customs, meanwhile, managed the game well, using their substitutions effectively to break East Bengal's rhythm. Despite being on the back foot for most of the match, they managed to create a few counter-attacking opportunities, but none that significantly troubled East Bengal's defense.

The full-time whistle blew with the scoreline at 0-0, reflecting a frustrating evening for East Bengal who had hoped to capitalise on their derby win. Their inability to break down a stubborn Customs defense highlighted the need for better finishing and perhaps more tactical flexibility when faced with well-organised opponents.
