By MyKhel Staff

In a thrilling Calcutta Football League 2024 encounter, Mohammedan SC faced Kalighat MS at the Mohammedan Ground in Kolkata on July 5. The defending champions Mohammedan SC were handed their first defeat of the season, losing 1-2 to a resilient Kalighat MS side.

The CFL 2024 match started with Mohammedan enjoying a strong spell of possession in the early minutes. However, Kalighat's defence, packed with nine players in their own half, managed to frustrate the Mohammedan forwards.

Mohammedan SC vs Kalighat

By the ninth minute, Kalighat began to grow in confidence and started to mount counter-attacks, putting pressure on the Mohammedan defence. In the 18th minute, Kalighat's Assad-ul-Haq capitalised on an error by the Mohammedan defense, winning the ball in a dangerous position.

Saqibul Ali, however, held onto the ball for too long and missed a big chance to score. Kalighat continued to threaten, and in the 20th minute, a corner for Kalighat resulted in a shot from outside the box by Assad-ul-Haq, which was deflected out of play by a Mohammedan defender.

Kalighat's persistence paid off in the 36th minute when Dorjee Tamang scored the first goal of the match, assisted by Tushar Biswakarma. The goal came from a swift counter-attack, showcasing Kalighat's ability to exploit gaps in the Mohammedan defense.

Just five minutes later, Dorjee Tamang doubled Kalighat's lead with a brilliant one-two play with Saqibul Ali, beating the goalkeeper with a low shot to make it 2-0 at halftime.

The second half saw Mohammedan SC making several substitutions in an attempt to change the game's dynamics. Despite their efforts, Kalighat's defense remained resolute, clearing numerous crosses and thwarting Mohammedan's attacks. The home fans grew increasingly impatient as their team struggled to find the back of the net.

In the 84th minute, Mohammedan finally got a breakthrough when Israfil Dewan scored after Kalighat failed to clear a free-kick into the box by Tanmoy. The goal reignited Mohammedan's hopes, and they intensified their attacks, but Kalighat's defense held firm.

The match concluded with a tense period of added time, where Mohammedan had several opportunities, including a late indirect free-kick, but they couldn't convert them into goals. Kalighat's goalkeeper Akash made crucial saves, including a reflex save from a deflected cross, ensuring their 2-1 victory.

This defeat pushes Mohammedan SC outside the top three places in Group A, giving the defending champions an early season jolt. Kalighat MS, on the other hand, celebrated a well-deserved victory, showcasing their potential to be strong contenders in the league.

Final Score: Mohammedan SC 1-2 Kalighat MS
