Ruben Amorim Emphasises Importance Of Champions League Qualification Over Europa League Success

Ruben Amorim asserts that Manchester United's qualification for the Champions League holds greater significance than winning the Europa League. He highlights the need for success to prepare for the next season amid a challenging Premier League campaign.

Ruben Amorim has emphasised that Manchester United's qualification for the Champions League holds more significance than winning the Europa League final. The upcoming match against Tottenham in Bilbao next Wednesday will determine who secures a spot in next season's Champions League. Both teams have struggled in the Premier League, with United sitting just above Tottenham in 16th place.

Amorim believes that merely winning the Europa League won't satisfy United's high expectations. "Personally for me, Champions League is more important, for everything, to prepare the next season," he stated during a press conference. "We are supposed to be in the Champions League, Europa League here is not enough and you feel it here."

Amorim Prioritises Champions League Qualification

Manchester United remains unbeaten in major European competitions this season, having won nine and drawn five of their 14 Europa League matches. This record boosts their confidence as they approach their ninth major European final. Among English clubs, only Liverpool has reached more finals with 15 appearances.

Amorim aims to join an elite group of managers who have won a major trophy in their first season at United. Previously, José Mourinho achieved this feat in 2016-17 by winning both the EFL Cup and Europa League, while Erik ten Hag did so in 2022-23 with an EFL Cup victory.

The current Premier League campaign has been challenging for United, but Amorim is focused on the upcoming final. He acknowledges that this fixture carries more weight than any other match this season. "A final is different," he said. "This season has been really difficult on everyone; the results and also the change in the staff and you can feel it in our club."

The team environment changes when preparing for a Europa League game compared to Premier League matches. Despite poor domestic results, Amorim assures that excitement builds within the squad during European fixtures.

Players Under Pressure

This season, many United players have faced criticism for their performances. Amorim accepts some responsibility but remains confident his players will deliver in Bilbao. If successful, they would become only the fourth team to win the Europa League without losing a match, following Chelsea (2018-19), Villarreal (2020-21), and Eintracht Frankfurt (2021-22).

"It's a thing of our players also," Amorim expressed his belief in his squad's ability to rise to the occasion. "They've proved in the past that in these kind of games, they are prepared to do that."

The upcoming final presents an opportunity for redemption after a tough domestic season. Success would not only secure Champions League qualification but also restore some pride for Manchester United.
