Champions League Round of 16: Brackets, Qualified Teams, Who Face Who in UCL Knockouts?

The UEFA Champions League knockouts draw is set to take place on Friday (February 27). After the playoffs concluded, 16 final teams are set to participate in the latest draw.

The 2025/26 knockout stage is no longer a series of random draws. It is a structured "tree" divided into two sides.

The League Phase Advantage

The top 8 teams from the league phase (like Arsenal and Bayern) were "seeded" and given a bye. The teams ranked 9th to 24th had to fight through a playoff round.

The "Tennis Style" Pairings: Teams are now paired in the bracket based on their rank. For example, the teams ranked 1st and 2nd (Arsenal and Bayern Munich) are placed at opposite ends of the bracket. They cannot meet until the Grand Final!

Home Advantage: Seeded teams (Top 8) are guaranteed to play the second leg of the Round of 16 at home. Furthermore, the teams that finished in the top 4 of the league phase will play the second leg at home in the Quarter-finals too.

Round of 16: The Predicted Scenarios

The draw on February 27th is restricted. Teams are "paired" (1 & 2, 3 & 4, etc.) and drawn into specific slots. Based on the final league standings, here is who the giants are likely to face:

Arsenal (Rank 1) & Bayern Munich (Rank 2)

• Potential Opponents: Atalanta or Bayer Leverkusen.

The Scenario: Since Arsenal and Bayern are the top two seeds, they occupy the "A" slots. They will draw one of the winners from the "lower-seeded" playoff survivors.

An Arsenal vs. Bayer Leverkusen clash would see Mikel Arteta face off against Xabi Alonso in a tactical masterpiece.

Sporting CP (Rank 7) & Man City (Rank 8)

Potential Opponents: Bodo/Glimt or Real Madrid

The Scenario: Because of their rankings, Real Madrid is mathematically positioned to face one of the 7th or 8th ranked teams.

It is highly likely to see a Real Madrid vs Manchester City or Real Madrid vs Sporting CP showdown in the Round of 16. The "Kings of Europe" might have to dethrone Pep's City earlier than usual!

Barcelona (Rank 5) & Chelsea (Rank 6)

Potential Opponents: Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) or Newcastle United.

The Scenario: PSG survived the playoffs and is now a dangerous "unseeded" floater.
The data suggests a massive Barcelona vs. PSG rematch is on the cards. Imagine the drama of Luis Enrique facing his former club once again!

Liverpool (Rank 3) & Tottenham (Rank 4)

Potential Opponents: Atletico Madrid or Galatasaray.

The Scenario: These two English giants will be drawn against the winners of the "middle" playoff bracket.
Liverpool vs. Atletico Madrid is a clash of styles that always produces fireworks.

This new format means every single goal in the Round of 16 changes the "probability" of the next big clash. With no away goals rule, expect more extra-time drama and penalty shootouts!
