Championship Preview: Celebrity-Owned Birmingham And Wrexham Set To Defy Opta's Predictions

As the Championship season begins, Birmingham City and Wrexham, backed by celebrity owners, aim to challenge predictions from Opta's supercomputer. Key insights reveal their chances for success.

The Championship season for 2025-26 is set to begin with Birmingham City hosting Ipswich Town at St. Andrew's. This season promises excitement, with Birmingham and Wrexham aiming for promotions under their celebrity owners. Meanwhile, Ipswich Town, Leicester City, and Southampton are eager to return to the Premier League after relegation.

Sheffield United, last season's play-off finalists, are determined to succeed under new management. Coventry City and West Brom also have high hopes. Charlton Athletic returns after five years away. Opta's supercomputer provides predictions on who might excel or falter this season.

Birmingham and Wrexham Challenge Opta Predictions

Under Tom Wagner's consortium, including NFL legend Tom Brady, Birmingham City had a challenging start but found success last year. Chris Davies led them to a record-breaking League One title with 111 points. The supercomputer predicts a better Championship performance this time.

Birmingham has strengthened their squad with ten new players, including Kyogo Furuhashi and Tommy Doyle. They have a 21% chance of reaching the play-offs but only a 2.3% chance of winning back-to-back titles. Their opening match against Ipswich brings memories of past victories.

Wrexham's journey from non-league football to the second tier in three years is remarkable. Phil Parkinson guided them through consecutive promotions. Their first second-tier match in over four decades is against Southampton.

Despite low odds of automatic promotion (2.8%), Wrexham aims high with Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney backing them. New signings like Liberato Cacace and Lewis O'Brien strengthen their squad as they aim for success.

Challenges for Relegated Teams

The relegated trio—Southampton, Ipswich Town, and Leicester City—face tough competition in the Championship. Southampton endured a record 30 losses last season, while Ipswich had their worst-ever points tally.

Leicester struggled defensively, conceding numerous goals alongside Southampton and Ipswich. Despite these challenges, Ipswich has an 8.1% chance of winning the title and a 15.2% chance of automatic promotion according to Opta's model.

Sheffield United's Prospects

Sheffield United aims to overcome past play-off disappointments under new manager Ruben Selles. They finished strong last season but fell short in the play-off final against Sunderland.

The supercomputer gives Sheffield United a 26.5% chance of winning the title and a strong probability of finishing in the top six (71%). Their defensive strength could be key to their success this season.

Swansea City's New Era

Swansea City has attracted attention with co-owners like Luka Modric and rapper Snoop Dogg joining forces to lead them back to prominence. Under Alan Sheehan's management, Swansea improved significantly last season.

The supercomputer suggests Swansea has potential for promotion with a 6.4% chance of finishing in the top two and making the play-offs in over 22% of simulations.

Watford's Struggles

Charlton Athletic faces Watford in their return to the second tier, both considered relegation candidates by Opta's model. Watford's managerial changes add uncertainty as Paulo Pezzolano takes charge amid challenges.

Oxford United also faces difficulties with similar relegation odds (21.7%). They must improve offensively after finishing last season with one of the lowest expected goals tallies in their division.
