Championship Update: Burnley Moves Closer To Automatic Promotion Spots As Hull City Defeats Plymouth Argyle

Burnley inches closer to promotion after defeating Cardiff City 2-1, while Hull City eases relegation concerns with a 2-0 win over Plymouth Argyle. Both teams show resilience in crucial matches.

Burnley edged closer to the Championship's automatic promotion spots with a 2-1 victory over Cardiff City. Despite conceding their first league goal of 2025, they secured three points at Cardiff City Stadium. Josh Brownhill opened the scoring in the 18th minute, converting Hannibal Mejbri's cross. Maxime Esteve doubled Burnley's lead in the 40th minute, capitalising on Zian Flemming's header.

Cardiff City responded swiftly, with Yousef Salech heading in just two minutes after Esteve's goal. This ended Burnley's impressive run of not conceding for 1,132 minutes since December 21. In the second half, Cardiff applied pressure and nearly equalised when Will Fish's late effort narrowly missed. Despite this, Burnley held firm, maintaining pressure on Sheffield United and Leeds United above them.

Burnley and Hull Secure Key Championship Wins

Elsewhere, Hull City distanced themselves from relegation worries with a 2-0 home win against Plymouth Argyle. Joe Gelhardt scored three minutes into the second half after a deflection fell his way. Abu Kamara added another goal just past the hour mark. This marked Hull's first home victory since before Christmas, while Plymouth now sits six points away from safety.

Bristol City's Play-off Push

Bristol City moved closer to the play-off spots with a 2-0 win at Millwall. Zak Vyner scored early in the second half from a corner situation. Harry Cornick then netted his first goal in over a year on a breakaway with seven minutes remaining. Millwall now finds themselves in 12th place following this defeat.

Preston North End and Swansea City Stalemate

Preston North End played out a goalless draw against Swansea City at home despite having better chances. They recorded an expected goals (xG) of 1.54 compared to Swansea's 0.47 but couldn't convert opportunities into goals. Milutin Osmajic and Brad Potts both had shots saved by Lawrence Vigouroux, Swansea's goalkeeper.

The draw leaves Preston in 15th place, sitting comfortably above the relegation zone by twelve points. Swansea trails closely behind them by two points and one position lower on the table.
