Ipswich Town Climb To Second As Middlesbrough Extend Promotion Push In Championship
Ipswich Town fought back from an early setback to beat Charlton Athletic 2-1 and return to the Championship automatic promotion spots. The result lifted Ipswich above Millwall into second place, and they still hold a game in hand in the race to join Coventry City in the Premier League.
Charlton began with a shock opener inside the first minute, yet Ipswich controlled the key moments from then on. Darnell Furlong cancelled out the early strike before half-time, and Jaden Philogene converted a second-half penalty that left Charlton still short of the point needed to secure survival.

The comeback marked a notable landmark for Kieran McKenna, who reached 50 Championship wins as Ipswich head coach. This was only Ipswich Town’s second victory against promoted opponents this season, and their first away from home, adding extra weight to a result that may prove vital in the Championship promotion race.
Performance data backed up the scoreline. Ipswich recorded 13 attempts, generating 1.87 expected goals. Philogene was central to their threat, registering a team-high three shots and making five touches in the penalty area, the second-most for Ipswich, as the visitors steadily turned pressure into points.
The match started badly for Ipswich when Greg Docherty struck after just 44 seconds. Tyreece Campbell’s shot was parried, and Docherty drilled in the rebound following a misplaced pass from Ben Johnson. Charlton’s bright start brought energy to the home support but failed to last across the 90 minutes.
Nine minutes before the interval, Ipswich levelled through Furlong. The defender collected the ball just outside the area and drove a precise low effort beyond the goalkeeper for a first goal of the season. That shift in momentum set up a more confident Ipswich display after the break.
The winning goal arrived on 58 minutes after Macaulay Gillesphey mistimed a challenge on Furlong inside the box. The referee pointed to the spot, and Philogene stayed calm from 12 yards, sending Ipswich into a crucial lead and preventing Charlton from claiming the single point needed to guarantee their Championship status.
Championship promotion race: Middlesbrough, Blackburn and Birmingham results
Middlesbrough also strengthened their automatic promotion chances with a tight 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at the Riverside. Morgan Whittaker returned to the starting side and struck in the 11th minute, capitalising on a loose back-pass from Gabriel Otegbayo to keep Middlesbrough firmly in the Championship promotion race.
That result moved Middlesbrough to within three points of Ipswich. Sheffield Wednesday attempted to build on three straight draws and extend an unbeaten sequence to four matches. However, the visitors could not find a way past Sol Brynn, and their winless run stretched to 38 league games.
Blackburn Rovers enjoyed a strong 3-1 victory against Sheffield United. Yuki Ohashi scored twice, either side of a first-half goal from Ryoya Morishita, giving Blackburn full control before the break. Harrison Burrows reduced the deficit after 57 minutes, yet United lacked the attacking threat to stage a late recovery.
Birmingham City also claimed three points, defeating Preston North End 2-1. Jay Stansfield opened the scoring before Ibrahim Osman added a second within six first-half minutes. Andrew Hughes responded soon after for Preston, but that goal proved only a consolation as Birmingham managed the second half effectively.

The latest set of results tightened the Championship promotion race, with Ipswich Town, Middlesbrough and Millwall all still targeting the final automatic place behind Coventry City. Ipswich’s away comeback, McKenna’s half-century of wins and strong attacking metrics underlined why they remain well placed heading into their remaining fixtures.
