Chelsea Maintains Women's Super League Lead With Late Penalty Against Arsenal

Chelsea defeated Arsenal 1-0 in the Women's Super League thanks to Guro Reiten's late penalty. This victory keeps Chelsea at the top of the league, nine points clear of Manchester City.

Chelsea's Women's Super League journey continued with a narrow 1-0 victory over Arsenal, thanks to Guro Reiten's late penalty. This win keeps Sonia Bompastor's team at the top of the league, having secured victories in 11 out of their first 12 matches. They now lead Manchester City by nine points and Arsenal by ten.

The decisive moment came when Lauren James, returning from injury, won a penalty in the 84th minute. Katie McCabe was sent off for dissent shortly after, and Reiten successfully converted the spot-kick, sending Daphne van Domselaar the wrong way. Chelsea had earlier announced Naomi Girma's world-record signing just before the match began.

Chelsea Wins 1-0 Against Arsenal in WSL

Erin Cuthbert posed an early threat to Van Domselaar's goal with three attempts. Arsenal gradually found their rhythm as Beth Mead missed two opportunities in the first half. Emily Fox nearly surprised Hannah Hampton with a powerful drive, while Catarina Macario tested Van Domselaar before halftime.

After halftime, Johanna Rytting Kaneryd had a weak shot saved by the Arsenal goalkeeper. Frida Maanum, an Arsenal substitute, squandered a great chance by shooting over with only 16 minutes left on the clock. The game took a pivotal turn when Kim Little fouled James, leading to Reiten's crucial penalty goal.

Chelsea's Impressive Home Record

Chelsea have now triumphed in 41 of their last 43 home games in the WSL (D1 L1), beginning with a win against Arsenal in February 2021. Bompastor’s squad has also won all eight league matches at Stamford Bridge this season, equalling Arsenal’s remarkable WSL record.

This victory makes Chelsea only the second team to win 11 of their first 12 games in a season, matching Arsenal’s achievement from the 2019-20 campaign. The hosts' performance was backed by an expected goals (xG) tally of 2.72 compared to Arsenal’s 1.05.

Chelsea’s consistent form and strategic gameplay have solidified their position as strong contenders in this season’s Women's Super League. Their ability to maintain pressure and seize critical moments has been key to their success so far.
