Erin Cuthbert's late goal secured Chelsea a thrilling 2-1 win over Manchester City in the Women's Super League. The Blues, led by Sonia Bompastor, had recently lost 2-0 to City in the Champions League quarter-final first leg. This defeat ended their 31-game unbeaten streak across all competitions. However, they remained undefeated in league play this season.
Despite facing a tough challenge at the Etihad Stadium, Chelsea managed to maintain their unbeaten league record. Brazilian forward Kerolin put City ahead with a brilliant solo effort in the 32nd minute. She picked up the ball 40 yards from goal, outsmarted Millie Bright with a feint, and scored into the bottom corner.

Before halftime, Kerolin forced Hannah Hampton into action from a tight angle. Chelsea were fortunate to trail by just one goal at the break. City's frustration grew when Jess Park's goal was disallowed due to a foul on Kerolin outside the box. Yui Hasegawa then hit the crossbar from the resulting free-kick.
Chelsea equalised four minutes into the second half through Beever-Jones. Johanna Rytting-Kaneryd set up the goal with a cutback from the right, allowing Beever-Jones to finish inside the far post. Chelsea improved significantly after this and tested City's goalkeeper Khiara Keating several times.
Their persistence paid off in stoppage time when Ashley Lawrence delivered a cross from the right. Cuthbert arrived unmarked to score with a diving header, sparking celebrations among Chelsea players. "THE FLYING SCOT BIG moments need BIG players, and Erin Cuthbert is just that," tweeted Barclays Women's Super League.
Chelsea's victory extended their lead over Arsenal to eight points after Arsenal's 4-0 win against Liverpool. Meanwhile, Manchester City remained fourth, trailing Chelsea by 15 points. Despite some luck with Park's disallowed goal, Chelsea capitalised on it to extend their unbeaten run in the WSL to 20 matches.
This streak dates back to Emma Hayes' tenure last season and includes 18 wins and two draws. The last team to go 20 games unbeaten in the WSL was also Chelsea during their record 33-match run between February 2019 and January 2021.
Both teams will soon face each other again for the second leg of their European tie on Thursday. This match marks an unprecedented fourth meeting between two WSL teams within a single calendar month.
Chelsea have become the first team since Manchester City in 2018-19 to avoid defeat through their first 17 matches of a WSL campaign. They aim to continue this impressive form as they prepare for another showdown with City.
