Chelsea began their Club World Cup journey with a 2-0 victory over Los Angeles FC, though their performance left room for improvement. Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez scored the goals, but Chelsea's overall play was not entirely convincing. In their Group D opener on Monday, Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson came close to scoring before Senegalese striker Jackson set up Neto's goal in the 34th minute in Atlanta.
Neto's goal came from a clever pass by Jackson, who found him on the right. Neto skillfully evaded LAFC defender Ryan Hollingshead before shooting low past former Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. LAFC had opportunities early in the second half, with David Martinez missing the target and Robert Sanchez saving Denis Bouanga's powerful shot. Timothy Tillman also narrowly missed before Liam Delap assisted Fernandez for Chelsea's second goal in the 79th minute.

Bouanga nearly scored again for LAFC, but Neto's late attempt hit the crossbar as Chelsea secured a win that sets them up for an exciting match against Brazilian team Flamengo on Friday. The victory was expected but highlighted areas where Chelsea could improve.
Hugo Lloris faced Chelsea for the 24th time, marking his most appearances against any opponent. Despite this familiarity, he has only managed four wins against them after this latest defeat. Although Chelsea dominated once more, they did not have complete control over the match. Maresca's team recorded 1.96 expected goals (xG) compared to LAFC's 0.82.
Chelsea's attacking struggles were evident as star player Palmer took six shots without hitting the target, contributing just 0.29 xG from those attempts. Maresca hopes Palmer will find his form soon as he aims to make an impact at the Club World Cup, where Chelsea reached the final in 2012 and won in 2021 during their previous appearances.
