Chelsea's recent Club World Cup match against Benfica faced an unexpected two-hour delay due to severe weather, which left Enzo Maresca frustrated. The game, held in Charlotte, saw Chelsea advance to the quarter-finals with a 4-1 win after extra time. However, the match stretched nearly five hours due to a thunderstorm interruption in the 86th minute.
During the break, players were seen staying active by riding exercise bikes and kicking balls in the dressing room. Chelsea had initially taken the lead with Reece James' impressive free-kick. But when play resumed, Angel Di Maria equalised with a penalty during stoppage time, forcing extra time at Bank of America Stadium.

Maresca expressed his dissatisfaction with the situation, stating, "I think it's a joke, to be honest. It's not football. It's not for us." He questioned the suitability of the tournament's location due to frequent weather-related suspensions. This was the sixth match affected by storms during this competition.
The momentum shifted in Chelsea's favour after Gianluca Prestianni received a red card shortly after extra time began. Chelsea capitalised on their numerical advantage with goals from Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. Maresca praised his team's resilience under challenging circumstances.
Despite the disruptions, Maresca was proud of his players' ability to adapt and secure a quarter-final spot against Palmeiras. "I'm very proud," he said. "The performance for me was top until the last five minutes when they stopped the game."
Maresca highlighted the difficulty of maintaining player focus during such long delays. He noted that players spent time talking to family for safety reasons and engaging in activities like eating and laughing during the break. "How can you keep them two hours inside, focused?" he questioned.
The manager acknowledged that managing a two-hour suspension is tough but commended his team for their perseverance. At 1-1 after regular time, Chelsea continued to push forward and ultimately earned a well-deserved victory.
Chelsea now looks forward to facing Brazilian side Palmeiras in their next match as they aim for further success in this prestigious tournament.
