Chelsea's head coach, Enzo Maresca, has expressed confidence in goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen despite a recent mistake. Jorgensen's error allowed Marco Asensio's volley to secure Aston Villa's 2-1 victory at Villa Park. Despite this, Maresca confirmed Jorgensen remains Chelsea's first-choice goalkeeper for their upcoming match against Southampton. "If we need to change a player every time they made a mistake then we would need to change many players game by game," Maresca stated.
Maresca also addressed concerns about Cole Palmer's recent dip in form. Palmer missed a crucial opportunity against Villa when the score was tied at 1-1. "I am always concerned about general performance," Maresca said, adding that Palmer is human and can have challenging periods during the season. He emphasised the importance of relying on the team rather than solely on Palmer.

Palmer has been instrumental for Chelsea, scoring 14 goals and providing six assists this season. Maresca believes Palmer will regain his form soon. "He needs to continue the way he is working," Maresca commented, acknowledging that expectations for goals or assists from Palmer are high each game. This pressure reflects Chelsea's current struggle to convert chances into goals.
Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes highlighted the need for improvement following their 4-0 defeat to Brighton. "We know that these tactics have risks but if you can win the duel, you can go forward," Fernandes explained. He stressed the importance of better preparation and following their manager's guidance.
Cole Palmer last assisted in a Premier League match against Villa in December. Since then, he has created 35 chances for teammates without success. With a five-game drought without a goal or assist, Palmer sees an opportunity to shine against Southampton's defence.
For Southampton, Tyler Dibling stands out as their second-highest scorer with four goals across competitions. He has created 14 chances in the Premier League and leads his team in carries ending in shots. Dibling trails only Cameron Archer as Southampton’s top scorer.
Chelsea have dominated matches against teams at the bottom of the table, winning 11 of their last 14 encounters (D2 L1). Their sole loss was against Southampton in February 2023. Meanwhile, Southampton have lost all three midweek Premier League games this season by an aggregate score of 9-2.
Southampton currently sit at the bottom with nine points from 26 matches (0.35 points per game). They need three more points from their final 12 games (0.25 points per game) to avoid matching Derby County’s record-low points total of 11 from the 2007-08 season.
The Opta win probability heavily favours Chelsea with a 78.8% chance of victory, while a draw stands at 12.8%, and Southampton's chances are at just 8.3%.
