Chelsea's manager, Enzo Maresca, has disclosed that Wesley Fofana might miss the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury. Fofana has been sidelined since early December after an injury against Aston Villa. This is the latest in a series of setbacks for the defender since his transfer from Leicester in 2022.
Fofana, who is 24 years old, has only made 32 appearances for Chelsea. He missed the entire 2023/24 season because of a ruptured ACL and faced fitness challenges during his first year at the club. Maresca expressed uncertainty about Fofana's return, stating, "He could be out for the season, yes. We don't know exactly but he could be out for part of the season."

The Italian coach also hinted at possible player departures in January, mentioning Ben Chilwell as a potential candidate. Chilwell has only featured once this season in a Carabao Cup match against Barrow and has been largely excluded by Maresca. "There are players that are probably going to leave [in January]," Maresca noted when asked about Chilwell's future.
Maresca praised Fofana's unique defensive skills, saying, "I am in love with Wes. I'm in love with Wes also because he is that kind of defender that gives you a chance to press and be aggressive one-on-one on the pitch. It is difficult to find that kind of player." He acknowledged Fofana's absence as a significant loss for the team.
Despite not having undergone surgery yet, Maresca did not dismiss the possibility of it being necessary for Fofana's recovery. The ongoing injury issues have been a concern since his arrival at Chelsea, impacting both his availability and performance on the field.
As Chelsea navigates these challenges, they will need to consider their options carefully during the upcoming transfer window. The potential changes could significantly impact team dynamics and strategy moving forward.
