Borussia Dortmund have agreed to transfer winger Jamie Gittens to Chelsea, with the deal expected to be completed after the Club World Cup. Chelsea's initial offer of £42 million (€48 million) for Gittens was rejected, as it did not meet Dortmund's valuation. However, a statement from Dortmund on Thursday confirmed that the transfer is set to proceed for a reported fee of £55 million (€63 million).
Gittens' journey at Borussia Dortmund highlights the club's talent development prowess. Lars Ricken, Dortmund's chief executive, noted that they identified Gittens early and nurtured his growth through their youth academy. "Jamie has repaid that trust with dedication, performance, and goals," Ricken stated. The move back to England is seen as beneficial for both parties.

In the 2024-25 Bundesliga season, Gittens made 32 appearances and scored eight goals, doubling his previous three-season tally in Germany. He also led Dortmund in dribbles attempted (160) and completed (77), while creating 21 chances as the team secured a fourth-place finish despite a challenging start.
Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl acknowledged the complexity of negotiations with Chelsea but expressed satisfaction with the outcome. "Jamie is an excellent player who has brought us great joy," Kehl said. He added that it was Gittens' desire to advance his career at Chelsea, and they wish him success.
Gittens will become Chelsea's seventh signing in an active transfer window. The club has already secured forwards Joao Pedro from Brighton and Liam Delap from Ipswich Town. Additionally, pre-arranged transfers for Estevao, Dario Essugo, Mamadou Sarr, and Kendry Paez have been finalised.
Both clubs are participating in the Club World Cup quarter-finals but are positioned on opposite sides of the draw. Chelsea is set to face Palmeiras in Philadelphia on Friday for a semi-final spot. Meanwhile, Dortmund will compete against Real Madrid at MetLife Stadium on Saturday.
During Dortmund's campaign in the United States, Gittens has only played 14 minutes, coming off the bench against Fluminense in the group stage. His limited playtime suggests he is being preserved for his impending move to Chelsea.
The transfer marks a significant step in Gittens' career as he returns to his home country. His development at Borussia Dortmund has been commendable, showcasing his potential as a top-tier player ready for new challenges at Chelsea.
