Chelsea Eyeing Big-Money Move for Star Goalkeeper Despite Already Having Three Keepers in Squad

Chelsea are reportedly in the market for a new goalkeeper, with Villarreal's Filip Jorgensen emerging as their primary target. This move comes despite the club already having three goalkeepers in their ranks, signaling a significant shift in strategy under new manager Enzo Maresca.

Maresca, who arrived from Leicester City this summer, is focused on implementing a style of play that emphasizes building from the back.

Chelsea's current goalkeeping options have not fully convinced the new manager in this regard who is comfortable with the ball at his feet.

The most prominent name in Chelsea's goalkeeping roster is Kepa Arrizabalaga. However, Kepa has struggled to establish himself since his move from Athletic Bilbao in 2018. Kepa spent last season on loan at Real Madrid and is not in Maresca’s plans for the upcoming season.

The Spanish keeper is expected to depart, with Saudi Arabia being a potential destination.

The other two goalkeepers are Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic. Sanchez, who lost his starting spot last season, has received praise from Maresca after recent performances. Petrovic, on the other hand, seized his opportunity with some promising displays.

Despite these options, Chelsea's pursuit of Jorgensen indicates a desire for an upgrade in their goalkeeping department.

Jorgensen's appeal lies not only in his shot-stopping abilities but also in his proficiency with the ball at his feet, which aligns perfectly with Maresca’s vision for the team.

The Danish goalkeeper would fit well into Chelsea’s new playing style, addressing concerns over the ball-playing capabilities of Sanchez and Petrovic.

Reports suggest that Chelsea have already agreed personal terms with Jorgensen and are preparing an offer of around €20 million for Villarreal.

Should the deal go through, one of Petrovic or Sanchez will likely leave the club. While Maresca has previously expressed belief in Sanchez, Jorgensen’s arrival would put significant pressure on the Spaniard to retain his place as Chelsea’s No. 1 goalkeeper.
