Chelsea Women Reach League Cup Final To Meet Manchester United In Showpiece

Chelsea Women clinched a place in the Women's League Cup final after narrow away wins over Manchester City, while Manchester United booked their first final appearance with a late goal at Meadow Park. The pair will contest the final on 15 March, with Chelsea aiming to extend their domestic treble-winning momentum.

Chelsea and Manchester United will contest the Women's League Cup final on 15 March after narrow 1-0 away victories over Manchester City and Arsenal sealed their places, with Chelsea reaching a seventh straight showpiece while United advanced to this stage for the first time.

Both semi-finals were tight, defence-heavy contests, yet each was decided by a single mistake or moment of quality, as Wieke Kaptein’s close-range header sent Chelsea through at Joie Stadium and an error from Anneke Borbe handed Elisabeth Terland the winner for United at Meadow Park.

Chelsea set to face United in Cup final

United’s breakthrough against Arsenal arrived in first-half stoppage time when Borbe passed directly to Ellen Wangerheim, who calmly squared for Terland to finish, giving United a lead that survived intense pressure and securing a landmark victory against a member of the Women's Super League’s established ‘Big Three’.

Arsenal’s task grew harder shortly after the hour mark as winger Olivia Smith collected a second yellow card for an unnecessary foul on Caitlin Foord deep inside Arsenal’s own half, reducing the Gunners to ten players while they were chasing an equaliser in front of the home support.

Despite the defeat, Arsenal created far more chances than United, registering 21 shots compared to United’s three and posting an expected goals figure of 2.04 against 0.49, yet Arsenal hit the target only three times while United managed four efforts on goal from far fewer attempts.

At Joie Stadium, Chelsea faced Women's Super League leaders Manchester City and again relied on ruthless finishing, as Kaptein rose above goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita to nod in from almost on the goal line four minutes before half-time after Sandy Baltimore reached the byline and delivered a looping cross.

Manchester City controlled possession for long spells and looked threatening throughout, but Vivianne Miedema and Kerstin Casparij both struck the post, while Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton produced important saves to deny Miedema and Yui Hasegawa during a one-sided second half.

City finished with an expected goals total of 2.36 compared to Chelsea’s 1.91 but could not convert pressure into goals and exited the competition at the semi-final stage, extending Chelsea’s run of avoiding defeat in League Cup matches outside the final since a loss to Manchester City in the 2018-19 semi-finals.

Women's League Cup final history and what is at stake

Chelsea, managed by Sonia Bompastor and defending a domestic treble from last season, will appear in a seventh Women's League Cup final, with only Arsenal having reached more title matches, recording ten final appearances in the competition’s history.

For Manchester United, this semi-final win marked a major step after losing four of the first five knockout ties against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City, and having previously fallen short in three League Cup semi-finals, United will now finally compete in a Women's League Cup final on 15 March.
