Chelsea Form Under Rosenior Must Improve Ahead Of Brighton Clash

Chelsea enter Tuesday’s trip to Brighton under heavy scrutiny, after four league defeats without scoring and growing concern over Champions League hopes. Brighton sit just one point behind, and recent form, plus head‑to‑head records, gives the hosts confidence at the Amex Stadium in what looks a key Premier League contest.

The 1-0 home loss to Manchester United at the weekend left Chelsea seven points adrift of fifth-placed Liverpool, who currently hold the final Champions League position, and only three clear of 12th-placed Fulham. That result continued a damaging run, adding pressure to the squad and staff before facing another side chasing European qualification.

Chelsea form under Rosenior must improve vs Brighton

Chelsea’s current league streak is one of the club’s worst. The team have lost, and failed to score, in four successive league matches, something only beaten once in their history, when a five-game run without a goal occurred in November 1912. That context frames the trip to Brighton as a crucial chance to reset momentum.

Brighton approach the game encouraged by Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham, when the team twice came from behind. That comeback kept Brighton close to Chelsea in the table and maintained belief that a European place remains realistic. Playing at the Amex Stadium, where results against Chelsea have improved, adds further belief within Fabian Hurzeler’s squad.

Liam Rosenior accepted accountability for Chelsea’s slide and underlined the urgency of a response. "We have to win. That is what this club demands and rightfully so, and that is what the fans expect," said Rosenior. "It is about winning football. That is what football is about. You can't speak about the long-term if you aren't doing the job in the short-term.

"Being really respectfully honest here, we haven't done well in recent games and that is on my shoulders as the head coach of the team. We have a huge game and then an FA Cup semi-final. That is why you are in football, but now is the time to deliver and that is what we have to work towards." Rosenior’s words underline the stakes across league and cup.

Fabian Hurzeler wants Brighton to treat the fixture as a chance to progress as a group. "I am impressed by the character and resilience the team have shown, especially the players, how they stick together, how they hold each other accountable, how they work in every training session," said Hurzeler. "It's a position we should really embrace, we have all worked hard for [it].

"Now we need to enjoy these moments and games because it's a great opportunity for us to grow. We want to enjoy it. We want to be very humble starting this game, we want to start with intensity and energy. Hopefully, we get a positive result." The message stresses focus and humility rather than league-table pressure.

Brighton vs Chelsea key players and stats

Danny Welbeck’s record for Brighton against Chelsea has been especially strong. Welbeck has contributed seven goals in eight Premier League meetings for Brighton, with five goals and two assists. Across earlier spells for Sunderland, Manchester United, Arsenal and Watford, Welbeck faced Chelsea 10 times, scoring once and providing no assists.

Cole Palmer has become Chelsea’s main attacking threat in recent clashes with Brighton. Palmer has scored five goals across the last three Premier League games against the Seagulls, including four in a single match at Stamford Bridge in September 2024. Across those three fixtures, Palmer attempted 16 shots, accounting for 43% of Chelsea’s total efforts.

Brighton vs Chelsea prediction and historical trends

Recent league meetings favour Brighton. The Seagulls have won the last two Premier League games against Chelsea, matching their total number of wins from the first 19 encounters, where the record stood at four draws and 13 defeats. Since the beginning of the 2022-23 season, Brighton have scored at least twice in six of seven league games against Chelsea.

Across that same period, Brighton have recorded 17 league goals against Chelsea, an average of 2.4 per match. Hurzeler is also unbeaten in Premier League matches against English managers. In nine such fixtures, Hurzeler’s record stands at seven wins and two draws, against Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe, Gary O'Neil, Graham Potter and Scott Parker.

Chelsea once travelled strongly to the Amex Stadium, going unbeaten in the first five Premier League away fixtures there with three wins and two draws. However, the visitors have now lost two of the last three league trips, winning the other. That shift mirrors broader away struggles that have emerged in recent seasons.

Recent Tuesday performances add another concern for Chelsea. The club have managed three wins from the last 14 Premier League matches played on a Tuesday, drawing six and losing five. In five of the most recent six such games, Chelsea conceded at least two goals, underlining defensive issues in midweek fixtures.

That pattern extends to away matches on Tuesdays. Since a 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace in July 2020, Chelsea have lost five of six Premier League away games on that day, drawing the other. Those figures give Brighton extra encouragement, particularly combined with the improving record at the Amex Stadium against this opponent.

Pre-match modelling reflects Brighton’s edge. OPTA’s win probability places Brighton as favourites, with Chelsea rated less likely to take three points and a draw viewed as the least probable of the three possible outcomes, though still given a meaningful chance.

{TABLE_1}
Outcome OPTA win probability
Brighton win 46.8%
Draw 26.4%
Chelsea win 26.8%

With Brighton pushing for Europe and Chelsea chasing a fading Champions League chance, the meeting carries weight for both clubs. Rosenior’s side need a quick response ahead of an FA Cup semi-final, while Hurzeler’s squad aim to build on strong statistics and recent resilience to strengthen their league position.
