Chelsea Secures Semi-Final Spot In Europa Conference League Despite Defeat To Legia Warszawa

Chelsea reached the Europa Conference League semi-finals after a 2-1 defeat to Legia Warszawa, winning 4-2 on aggregate. Coach Enzo Maresca faces pressure despite the advancement.

Chelsea advanced to the Europa Conference League semi-finals despite a 2-1 loss at home to Legia Warszawa. The aggregate score was 4-2 in Chelsea's favour, thanks to their 3-0 win in the first leg. However, this defeat adds pressure on coach Enzo Maresca. Chelsea started strong, with Cole Palmer missing an early chance, but Filip Jorgensen's foul led to Tomas Pekhart scoring from the penalty spot for Legia.

Legia had opportunities to extend their lead, with Ryoya Morishita missing a significant chance. Chelsea equalised when Jadon Sancho set up Marc Cucurella for a goal in the 33rd minute. Claude Goncalves nearly scored from long range for Legia, and Cucurella's potential second goal was disallowed due to offside after Christopher Nkunku's assist.

Chelsea Advances Despite Loss to Legia Warszawa

In the second half, Steve Kapuadi restored Legia's lead by heading in a rebound following Goncalves' attempt from a corner. Tyrique George had a goal ruled out for offside, and Jorgensen risked conceding another penalty with a challenge on Luquinhas. Despite these setbacks, Chelsea held on to their aggregate advantage.

Elsewhere in the competition, Real Betis and Fiorentina secured their places in the semi-finals. Betis drew 1-1 against Jagiellonia Bialystok after winning 2-0 at home in the first leg. Fiorentina played out a 2-2 draw with Celje, advancing with a 4-3 aggregate victory.

Chelsea's Tactical Struggles

Legia's performance was not just luck; they achieved an impressive expected goals (xG) figure of 2.22 from their 13 shots at Stamford Bridge. This is the highest xG any team has recorded against Chelsea in this season's Conference League. Some Chelsea fans have expressed dissatisfaction with their team's possession-heavy style recently.

Chelsea had twice as many entries into the final third compared to Legia (69 to 28) but failed to capitalise effectively. Although they remain favourites for this tournament, Chelsea have only won two of their last five matches across all competitions, including two draws and one loss.

A challenging London derby against Fulham awaits Chelsea next in the Premier League schedule.
