Chelsea's title aspirations suffered a setback with a 2-0 defeat to Ipswich Town. Enzo Maresca, Chelsea's manager, reiterated that his team is not focused on the title race. "We focus game by game. We are not focused on title race or those things," he told BBC Sport. This loss marked Chelsea's second consecutive Premier League defeat, widening the gap with leaders Liverpool.
Joao Felix had a potential equaliser disallowed for offside by VAR, while Cole Palmer hit the woodwork twice in the first half. Despite creating numerous chances, Chelsea failed to score against Ipswich's goalkeeper Christian Walton. Maresca defended his forwards, stating, "We had chances with Joao and Noni [Madeuek] so it's not about the striker."

Ipswich secured their first home win of the season in their final match of 2024. Kieran McKenna's side capitalised on Chelsea's missed opportunities with goals from Liam Delap and Omari Hutchinson. Delap was instrumental with four shots on target and an assist, showcasing his prowess at just 21 years old.
Hutchinson praised Delap after the match, saying, "He's a unit...a good striker to play with." Hutchinson himself scored against his former club, expressing gratitude for Chelsea's role in his career but emphasising his commitment to Ipswich. "I'm grateful for what Chelsea did in my career...but I'm playing for Ipswich now," he stated.
Chelsea managed 20 shots without scoring, their highest tally since December 2017 against Everton. Despite this offensive effort, Maresca highlighted areas for improvement: "It was a strange game...we could do many things better." The Italian coach remains focused on gradual progress rather than immediate results.
Delap urged his teammates to maintain their determination following the victory. "We need to show the grit and determination to win three points," he told Sky Sports. He acknowledged past performances lacked results but stressed the importance of accumulating wins moving forward.
Ipswich celebrated their first top-flight victory over Chelsea since 1993. The win provided a morale boost as they aim to improve their standing in the league. Hutchinson noted the significance of making history with this triumph at Portman Road.
Chelsea now trails Arne Slot’s side by ten points, though they have played one more game. Maresca remains optimistic about improving performance as they navigate through the season’s challenges one match at a time.
