Chelsea's Disappointing Display At Brighton Criticised By Enzo Maresca As Worst Performance Yet

Enzo Maresca condemned Chelsea's lacklustre performance in a 3-0 loss to Brighton, calling it the worst since his tenure began. Despite high possession, Chelsea failed to register a shot on target and struggled with injuries.

Enzo Maresca criticised Chelsea's performance in their 3-0 loss to Brighton, calling it the worst since he joined Stamford Bridge last year. At the Amex Stadium, Chelsea were outplayed, with Kaoru Mitoma scoring a remarkable goal and Yankuba Minteh adding two more. The absence of striker Nicolas Jackson, sidelined for six weeks due to a hamstring injury, was felt by Maresca's team.

Chelsea dominated possession with nearly 70% but failed to register a shot on target, a first since September 2021 against Manchester City. Cole Palmer missed two chances over Bart Verbruggen's goal, while Tyrique George's cross almost led to an own goal by Adam Webster. Despite these attempts, Chelsea couldn't trouble Brighton significantly.

Maresca Critiques Chelsea's Defeat at Brighton

The defeat leaves Chelsea in the top four for now, but Manchester City and Newcastle United are close behind. Chelsea have not won in five away Premier League matches (D2 L3), and their inconsistent form extends beyond away games. They have earned only nine points from their last nine league matches after securing 34 points from their first 16 games of the season.

Maresca expressed his frustration at this setback, which impacts their top-four aspirations. "Probably since I arrived that is the worst performance," Maresca told BBC Sport. "We are fourth in the league and by winning tonight you can go one point from third and make the gap to the rest bigger and the performance is not one you want to offer, so we are very upset and sorry for the fans that were here."

Maresca highlighted injuries as a key issue affecting Chelsea's performance, especially among strikers. "The reason why is because of the injuries in this moment, especially with the strikers...important players are out, but we need to find a solution," he stated. The lack of a proper number nine has forced Chelsea to seek alternative strategies.

Despite controlling play for half an hour, Chelsea struggled after Mitoma's goal. They found it difficult to create opportunities and appeared vulnerable defensively. "For half an hour I think we were in control but after that moment [Kaoru Mitoma's goal] we looked like we could concede chances easily, and we struggled to create chances," Maresca explained.

As Chelsea navigates these challenges, they must find solutions quickly to maintain their position in the league standings. Their recent form highlights the need for improvement both at home and away if they aim to secure a top-four finish this season.
