Chelsea Demonstrates Progress Under Enzo Maresca Despite Loss To Manchester City

Enzo Maresca asserts that Chelsea is improving despite their recent Premier League defeat to Manchester City. The team aims to learn from mistakes and build on their performance as they prepare for upcoming matches.

Enzo Maresca remains optimistic about Chelsea's progress, despite their inconsistent Premier League form, highlighted by a 3-1 loss to Manchester City. Noni Madueke scored early for Chelsea, but goals from Josko Gvardiol, Erling Haaland, and Phil Foden turned the match in City's favour at the Etihad Stadium.

Chelsea's recent performance has seen them win only one of their last four league matches this year. This slump has caused them to fall out of the top four after a promising start. Under Maresca, Chelsea initially performed well away from home but have now failed to secure a win in their last four away games.

Chelsea Shows Improvement Despite Recent Loss

The match statistics revealed Chelsea had an expected goals (xG) total of 1.61 from 10 shots, while City had 2.7 from 15 attempts on Robert Sanchez's goal. Maresca pointed out that Haaland's goal was pivotal, with Sanchez admitting his mistake. "The game started very well for us," Maresca said.

He added, "We scored the first one and could have scored the second goal two or three times. The game would have completely changed." Despite Chelsea's efforts, conceding late in the first half shifted momentum. "Robert is the first one [to admit] he knows he has to do better," Maresca acknowledged.

Chelsea captain Reece James echoed Maresca's sentiments about their progress and misfortune. "It's frustrating not to come away with more," James told Sky Sports. He expressed hope that their hard work would soon yield positive results, acknowledging the team's relative newness compared to City's established squad.

"We've been together less than one year, and they've been together for seven years," James noted. He emphasised taking each game as it comes rather than focusing solely on top-four aspirations. Chelsea will next face West Ham at Stamford Bridge under former manager Graham Potter.

Sanchez has made more errors leading to goals than any other Premier League player this season, with five mistakes marking a record for a Chelsea player since 2007-08. Despite these challenges, Maresca believes in continuous improvement through daily hard work and discussions with players.

Maresca stated confidently, "We are making progress. We are better than one or two months ago." He believes these challenging moments will ultimately strengthen the team as they strive for better results in upcoming matches.
