Chelsea Aims To Maintain Attacking Mindset Against Manchester City In Champions League Matches

Sonia Bompastor urges Chelsea to continue their attacking strategy against Manchester City in the Champions League. Following a recent victory, the team is focused on leveraging their squad depth and returning players like Keira Walsh for success.

Chelsea's recent triumph in the Women's League Cup has set a positive tone for their upcoming matches against Manchester City. Sonia Bompastor, Chelsea's manager, emphasised maintaining an aggressive approach to tackle City in four consecutive encounters. The Blues secured a 2-1 victory over City in the League Cup final, marking their first trophy under Bompastor's leadership.

As Chelsea shifts focus to the European stage, they face a challenging schedule with a Women's Super League match against Nick Cushing's side sandwiched between two legs of the Champions League quarter-final. Despite having defeated City twice this season, Bompastor remains cautious. "It's a different competition and the context is different with two legs," she stated during her pre-match press conference.

Chelsea Prepares to Face Manchester City in Champions League

The return of Keira Walsh provides Chelsea with a significant boost. Walsh, who missed the last three games due to injury, boasts an impressive 93% pass accuracy in the Women's Champions League this season. Her presence adds depth to the squad as they prepare for these crucial fixtures. "It's always positive when players come back into the squad," Bompastor noted.

Walsh has been instrumental in her recent appearances, losing only twice in her last 22 matches in the competition. She is now ready to face her former team, having spent eight years with Manchester City earlier in her career. Her return offers Chelsea more options both on and off the field.

Bompastor highlighted the importance of utilising squad depth given their packed schedule. "I'm lucky to have a really good squad with talent, quality and depth," she said. The manager aims to involve all players across these four games to maintain freshness and energy levels.

Choosing the right starting XI is crucial for each game, but Bompastor also values contributions from substitutes. "Having players on the bench who could bring energy to the game" is vital for overall team performance, she explained. This strategy ensures that every player contributes positively during matches.

Chelsea's recent record against Manchester City shows promise; they have lost only one of their last eight away games against them across all competitions (W4 D3). The most recent encounter ended with a 1-0 win for Chelsea in last season's League Cup semi-final.

Bompastor remains focused on maintaining an attacking mindset throughout these fixtures. "We will attack the game and make sure we put all the elements into it," she asserted confidently. This approach aims to maximise their chances of success in both domestic and European competitions.
