Chelsea Sacks Liam Rosenior After 107 Days In Charge Amid Poor Form

Chelsea have dismissed Liam Rosenior after 107 days in charge, acting four days before the FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United. The move follows a 3-0 Premier League defeat to Brighton, with the club sliding to seventh after five straight league losses without scoring.

Calum McFarlane will guide Chelsea on an interim basis until the end of the season, starting with the Wembley meeting against Leeds. The change comes at a sensitive stage, with domestic ambitions still alive despite a collapse in league form and recent Champions League elimination.

Chelsea sacks Liam Rosenior after 107 days

Chelsea’s current sequence is one of the bleakest in the club’s history. They have lost five league matches in a row without a goal for the first time since 1912. Their overall losing run is the club’s worst in the Premier League since a six-match slide in November 1993.

The poor run stretches beyond the league. Chelsea have won only one of their last eight games in all competitions, beating League One side Port Vale in the FA Cup quarter-final. During that period they also exited the Champions League, adding pressure on Rosenior before the board intervened.

Across each team’s last nine Premier League games, only Tottenham, with two points, have collected fewer than Chelsea’s five, which came from one win, two draws and six defeats. That slide has left qualification for UEFA competitions in serious doubt with limited matches remaining.

Rosenior’s overall numbers underline the mixed picture. Chelsea played 23 times under Rosenior in all competitions, winning 11, drawing two and losing 10, a win rate of 47.8%. The sharp downturn followed a strong start, when Rosenior arrived from Strasbourg in January on a five-and-a-half-year contract and won seven of the first nine fixtures.

The Opta supercomputer now estimates Chelsea have only a 1.4% chance of finishing in the Premier League’s top five. Sixth place might still secure Champions League qualification if Aston Villa win the Europa League, yet Chelsea’s prospects of ending the season in sixth are rated at just 10.2%, compared with Brighton’s 36% likelihood.

"Liam has always conducted himself with the highest integrity and professionalism following his appointment midway through the season, the club said in a statement on their website. This has not been a decision the club has taken lightly. However, recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards, with still so much more to play for this season. Everyone at Chelsea FC wishes Liam every success in the future."

"As the club works to bring stability to the head coach position, we will undertake a process of self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment, Chelsea concluded in their statement." The focus now shifts to McFarlane’s short-term impact and whether Chelsea can rescue their season through the FA Cup or a late league surge.
