Chelsea have secured Jamie Gittens, an England Under-21 international, as their seventh addition in a bustling transfer window. The club paid Borussia Dortmund an initial £48.5 million for the winger. Performance-related bonuses could increase the total to £55 million. Gittens has committed to a seven-year contract with Chelsea, marking a significant investment in his future at the club.
Before the Club World Cup commenced last month, Chelsea attempted to acquire Gittens. However, Dortmund's chief executive, Lars Ricken, stated that Chelsea did not meet their valuation of the Manchester City academy graduate. Ahead of the Club World Cup quarter-finals, Ricken confirmed that an agreement had been reached for Gittens to join the Premier League side.

Gittens expressed his excitement about joining Chelsea on the club's website: "It feels great... It's a great feeling to join such a big club as Chelsea. I can't wait to learn from everyone in the team and to push myself to the max here. It's an amazing feeling." His arrival follows Chelsea's acquisitions of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap from Brighton and Ipswich Town, respectively.
In the 2024-25 Bundesliga season, Gittens made 32 appearances for Dortmund, scoring eight goals—twice as many as he managed in his first three seasons in Germany. He attempted 160 dribbles and successfully completed 77, leading his team in both categories. Additionally, he created 21 chances during the campaign.
Gittens was present for Chelsea's 2-1 victory over Palmeiras in the Club World Cup quarter-final on Friday but played only 14 minutes across Dortmund's first four games in the tournament. Like Estevao, he will be unavailable for Chelsea's semi-final against Fluminense on Tuesday. His competitive debut might occur against Crystal Palace at the start of the Premier League season.
Dortmund will face Real Madrid on Saturday for a spot in the Club World Cup semi-finals. Meanwhile, Gittens' move to Chelsea marks another step in his promising career as he prepares to make an impact in English football.
Chelsea have also finalised pre-agreed transfers for Estevao, Dario Essugo, Mamadou Sarr and Kendry Paez. These additions reflect Chelsea's strategy of investing in young talent with potential for growth and development within their squad.
