Chelsea Expands Squad With Signing Of Jorrel Hato From Ajax For £38.6 Million

Chelsea has signed young defender Jorrel Hato from Ajax for £38.6 million. The 19-year-old has committed to a seven-year deal, enhancing Chelsea's defensive options.

Chelsea has bolstered its squad by acquiring Jorrel Hato from Ajax for £38.6 million (€44.2 million). The 19-year-old defender, who can operate as both a centre-back and left-back, has committed to a seven-year contract with the club. "I'm very excited, I'm so happy to be here," Hato expressed on Chelsea's official website. "I thought a lot about my future and wanted to take the next step in my career. Chelsea is the best place for me to do that so I'm very happy."

Hato's versatility was evident last season in the Eredivisie, where he played 31 matches, starting 30 of them. He scored two goals and provided six assists, ranking just behind Utrecht's Souffian El Karouani, who led defenders with eight assists. This performance highlights his potential impact at Chelsea.

Chelsea Signs Jorrel Hato from Ajax

Ajax's technical director, Alex Kroes, acknowledged the club's reluctance to part with Hato but respected his ambition to join the Premier League. "With Jorrel's departure, we lose one of our key figures in defence," Kroes stated. "He is not only a tremendous talent and a great player, but he also has an excellent character and personality."

Kroes further added that while Ajax would have preferred to retain Hato for another year, they understand his eagerness for this new chapter in England. He wished Hato success and expressed pride in his contributions to Ajax.

Hato marks Chelsea's ninth signing this summer as they aim to strengthen their squad following a fourth-place finish in the Premier League last season under Enzo Maresca. The Club World Cup winners are keen on building a team capable of challenging for more honours.

The young defender joins a roster looking to blend youth with experience as Chelsea seeks to enhance its defensive options. His arrival is part of a broader strategy to secure long-term talent capable of contributing immediately and developing further.

Chelsea fans eagerly anticipate seeing how Hato will integrate into the team and contribute to their ambitions in domestic and international competitions. His addition reflects the club’s commitment to investing in promising young players who can make an immediate impact.

As Chelsea continues its summer spending spree, securing talents like Hato demonstrates their intent to remain competitive at the highest levels of football. The club’s strategic acquisitions aim to ensure sustained success across various competitions in the coming seasons.
